Monthly music program Red Bull Sound Select reveals its next instalment of Melbourne and Sydney events, programmed by I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah. On September 28, Red Bull Sound Select heads to Melbourne’s Gasometer Hotel, seeing international act The Orwells headline the evening, joined by crisp Brisbane guitar group Good Boy and Brunswick indie four-piece Press Club. On the following night, for Sydney’s ninth 2017 event, The Orwells and Good Boy head north to Marrickville Bowling Club for an evening of revelry, supported by local garage act, Sunscreen.

Red Bull Sound Select returns to Melbourne and Sydney for a night of maximum distortion in September, showcasing some of Australia’s toughest garage outfits, alongside Chicago headliners The Orwells. From writing and recording in sweaty garages, communal warehouses and shared dwellings, these acts are redefining the genre through their raw energy, determination, relentless grit and sonic beauty.

Melbourne and Sydney headliners, The Orwells make their maiden voyage to Australia in September. Hot on the release of their raucous third album, Terrible Human Beings - the five-piece bring their reputation as one of Chicago’s most dynamic live acts to Red Bull Sound Select for two special live performances. Formed during high school in Elmhurst, Illinois, the band have performed at major festivals including Bonnaroo and The Governor’s Ball, with upcoming support slots for The Pixies. Their unmistakable formula of ripped-apart garage rhythms and instant melodies, make them an eagerly awaited headline act.

Joining The Orwells in both cities, is well-loved Brisbane band Good Boy. Winners of triple j’sUnearthed Laneway Festival competition in 2016, the three-piece continue to win crowds over with their pristine guitar tones, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and unforgiving energy. The trio will appear at Red Bull Sound Select with their newest single “Fishing With A Shotgun” under their belts, as mastered by Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control legend, Mikey Young.

Appearing in Melbourne only is four-piece group, Press Club. The Brunswick locals will showcase their commanding punk sound, fronted by vocalist Natalie Foster. Dealing with themes of decay, demolition and development on a mass scale, the core of Press Club is tough, as unbridled energy is bundled into poignant two-and-a-half minute songs.

Furthermore, Newtown act Sunscreen will appear in Sydney only. Made up of Sarah Sykes (also of FLOWERTRUCK), Alexander McDonald and Hugo Levingston, the band have supported the likes of Rolling Blackouts Coast Fever and Shining Bird, with their guitar melodies and chords reminiscent of Mazzy Star and 90s post-punk. The band prepare for the release of their debut EP in October, with a warmly welcomed appearance at Red Bull Sound Select.

In turn with Laneway Festival’s Travis BankoFBi Radio’s Amelia Jenner and Chapter Music, Ponniah is one of Red Bull Sound Select’s key curators, supporting and nurturing live music discovery by pairing local established artists with breaking talent across the year’s designated events.

Witness an evening of maximum distortion with special Chicago guests, The Orwells and some of Australia’s most-determined garage acts in Melbourne and Sydney this September.
