A Quick Chat With PRISCILLA

Boorloo/ Perth-based electro-pop duo, PRISCILLA, climb to new heights with their powerful new single ‘Lose Control’. Since debuting in 2018, the duo have 7 singles under their belt and have supported the likes of The Presets, Wafia, San Cisco, Haiku Hands, ALPINE and Woodes. It also has to be mentioned that they will be supporting The Veronicas in December. Hitting right in the heart, ‘Lose Control’ is all about celebrating the strength in one’s community, something we cherish here at Aus Music Scene with our community. We caught up with P Gardner (they/them) and Luke Minness (he/him) to find out more about the release.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

P: To me, this track is both an outlet for my frustrations with the world, and to celebrate the parts of life that bring me joy. I hope that the two can coexist together in this song, and that some folks can get a sense of that and find connections to their own experiences.

Who are some of your influences and why?

Luke: I’m a big fan of Christine & The Queens, Charlie XCX, Sigrid, Robyn, Troye Sivan and pretty much any song with a Swedish production influence (especially tunes by Oscar Gorres).

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

P: I think what’s so fun about our process is that it is very fluid. We’re often sending ideas back and forth to each other, and are open to learning from each other’s skill sets. I think that’s why we’ve kept working together all these years - that sense of curiosity reaches every aspect of our writing and recording process.

What do you think makes a great song?

P: My favourite songs are usually the ones that make me feel something. That’s always a goal of mine when writing and creating.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

P: There’s so many artists I admire and take inspiration from. If we lived in a fantasy land where anything was possible, it would be an absolute dream to collaborate with Björk. Other wild wishlist suggestions would be Billie Eilish or MUNA.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

Luke: My (sometimes unhealthy) obsession with music takes up all the real estate in my head rent free tbh, so I don’t really know if I have any other outlets. Can anime appreciation be put down as a creative outlet?

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Luke: ALL OF THEM - Perth has the most talented artists in the world and going out to see gigs each weekend is such a treat! To name a few - Alterboy, Joan & the Giants, Anesu, Boox Kid, Drea, King Ibis, Butter, Klaude, Adrian Dzuke…

Winter or summer and why?

Luke: Winter for SURE! I’m from Melbourne and feel my fanciest in a pair of black jeans and big puffy jacket… plus the coffee tastes just that little bit better.

P: I love winter days where I can cuddle up with my cats, a cozy game, and hear the rain outside my window. I also love long warm (but not too warm) days where I can go for a surf and enjoy toasty sunset picnics. Please don’t make me choose!

What else do you have planned for the year?

Luke: We’re supporting The Veronicas at the Ice Cream Factory December 2nd and launching our single at the Fremantle Arts Centre Dec 11 with Boox Kid on the bill too!

P: I still can’t believe we’re going to be supporting The Veronicas who are *literal* icons! I’m also looking forward to having the time and space to work on new music!
