A QUICK CHAT WITH GEM

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘’Ruins’?

Ruins is a true story. I was sitting on the floor of my apartment and the lyrics came flooding out. I was 9,000 miles from where I wanted to be, with who I wanted to be with and I was feeling every single mile.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I have so many musical influencers and I believe every moment is also having an impact on my artistry. This song in particular I feel like Joni Mitchell’s Blue is a lifetime influence. Holly Humberstone is another one right now. Sometimes I’ll hear a clever hook, or a turn of phrase and it’ll strike a chord within my imagination. I love how songs from these women are whole moods.

What’s the creative process like for you?

It’s always different. With Ruins, it was very easy, it fell out because I needed to say it. Those words had to come out and be felt. You really have to feel it before you heal it and I use that a lot when songwriting.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

I would make it more known in international markets, we have so many incredible artists that deserve to be on the world stage. I think musically it’s a great fit with America and Europe too.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

Unthinkable. Music is my therapy so I would be living a very different life experience.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

I would like to do a collab with Shallou. I love his chilled downtempo vibes, I think we could do something really magical together.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

My advice would be find your people and be loyal to them. Don’t take anything forgranted and invest time in uncovering who you are and what you want to say.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

Oft, So hard. Recently I worked with Mabvuto Carpenter (Beyonce’s vocal arranger) and his energy was angelic. It was such a pleasure to share space with him. He sings harmonies on my song Remedy and he really added the divine touch.

Favourite hangover cure?

White cheddar popcorn and electrolytes.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

I’m currently on tour, working through California and then the rest of the USA.
