A QUICK CHAT WITH HELEN SHANANHAN

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Canvas’

The inspiration came from a prompt in an online songwriting club (I Heart Songwriting Club), the word was ‘lessons’. I thought about what I had learnt to accept from certain people over time, and how that impacted me negatively.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

My influences range from people like Missy Higgins to Joni Mitchell. I think they have affected my songwriting in terms of focusing on memorable melodies and honest lyrics, I try to incorporate that as best as I can!

What’s the creative process like for you?

It usually begins with me trawling through my journal for the spark of an idea. I have kept one since my school years to help me sort out my thoughts. I will then try and write as much as I can about that particular idea - and then try and figure out a melody and chord progression. This is definitely something that is changeable, and I have been frequenting the I Heart Songwriting Club online platform,  which works on getting prompts and themes to inspire.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

In a perfect world, I would love it if it wasn’t about money or ‘who you know’ to be heard. I know that’s not always the case, but it is definitely a hard slog when you’re an independent artist who doesn’t make ‘mainstream’ music.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

I think it would be a lonely place, it would be hard for me to cope with the stress of life. Music is definitely like therapy to me!

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

I would be honored to collaborate with Missy Higgins, as someone I really look up to and admire personally and musically!

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Try not to be swayed by what you think you ‘should’ be, and just be who you are. What will set you apart is your unique self - and that’s why music is so wonderful, we hear from each individual's point of view.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

I would have to say Tim Minchin, it was amazing to hear his stories and to be on stage with him. The way he interacts with the audience is incredible and he’s very insightful and quick witted.

Favourite hangover cure?

I am now not game enough to even drink enough to get a hangover, having a toddler really makes you reconsider that next drink - knowing you’ll have to run around constantly the next day haha!

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

I wish, I really want to - but the current state of things is making life a little unpredictable. Things in WA are only starting to ramp up with COVID cases and I have a feeling we’re going to be suffering over the next few months with gig cancellations etc. It might need to wait til 2023 - but I am hopeful it might be before then!
