X Club National Tour selling out on the back of epic Beyond The Valley performance.

Fresh off the plane X Club began their visit home in true style. Their debut Dance Dome performance at Beyond The Valley signifying their homecoming success.  They were able to build tension early on with hypnotic crunching rhythms and engaging vocal edits.  The duo from Meanjin/Brisbane got the crowd up to speed in a matter of minutes. The mix of original and curated productions turned the Dance Dome into a carefully constructed cathedral of experience.

X Club were able to create a safe space for expression and movement through their hypnotic, progressive and high BPM techno. X Club fans were also treated to a range of vocal edits satisfying the curiosities of those newer to larger festivals such as BTV.  ‘Feel The Groove’ edit was a highlight, swooping in at 1 hour and 10 minutes before the London based pair brought home the historic performance with release  ‘Rise Up’’ with Skin On Skin.

Ben Clarke & Jesse Morath the architects behind X Club will be showcasing their new music and show across the country in a string of shows. This includes an exciting collaboration with Untitled Group at The Timber Yard on the 25th of February which has already sold out, an incredible feat of its own. Eora/Sydney show has also sold out. Others expected to follow.

X Club have created an exciting new precedent for emerging Australian underground artists. Selling out one of the country's biggest live music venues demonstrates that progressive dance music is alive and well in Australia.

ausmusicscene was very fortunate to catch up with X Club before their show at BTV.
Read the abridged conversation below.

What is your earliest musical inspiration?

Ben - I grew up around dance music. My dad always used to play a lot of different types of dance music. A lot of black music, yeah. When we first became of age at 18 we DJ’ed in clubs and have both been immersed in dance music since.

Jesse - Yeah, I had similar upbringing with music. I had an older brother and older sister who both listened to really cool music like Justice and that kind of French house scene, a lot of trance, Daft Punk was a big inspiration. My family were really big into music, so that brought me up before I went to music school. I started DJing and listening to a lot of techno and electronic music. It all just kind of built from there. Traveling a lot also built my taste for techno and underground music. It's been just a spiral.

Tell me about one of those experiences on a dance floor overseas where your world of inspiration was shattered ?

Jesse - It was probably one of our first shows we did the show in Dublin. We sold it out. As an experience that was probably one of our biggest moments we’ve had to date.
Ben - The Dublin show was our first show anywhere outside Australia. It was an  unreal experience. It just blew everything out of proportion Yeah, it  kind of blew our minds. And it was amazing seeing the reception to music in a completely different country.  Yeah, it was pretty surreal.

Jesse - We always wanted to be there so it was such a crazy experience and yeah, experience first getting there and playing. It was beautiful, exciting and fun.

Sam - That's a full moment in time.

Ben & Jesse - Something we won't forget. Yeah.

What artists inspire your production?

Ben - We are heavily inspired by a lot of the techno and house from the early to late twenties era. There's a few particular artists such as Swedish producer Hertz.  The techno in that period  has a really soulful groove to it. It's the energy we try to portray. But yeah, artists like Hertz and Chris Chambers.

Jesse - Old school house artists like Kerry Chandler who make really fun and exciting stuff, but on a different level. Yeah that's what we are about.

Sam -  Having listened to your music, it's the rhythmic driving nature of it that has that timeless aspect to it.

Jesse - Definitely, yeah we're a big fan of progression

and progression in music, but also in our sets. We want things to be building all the time to big moments that are driving and exciting.

Ben - Totally

What's the number one story you share with people back home when you talk to them about all the amazing things you have been doing?

Jesse - There's so many stories and a lot of them merge into one.  But I guess just being over in Europe experiencing and seeing things differently. I feel like it's been such an exciting moment for us and an exciting year. And it's funny, like talking to friends, asking us about things like, you know, what's your favorite part? And it's honestly been the experience as a whole.

Ben - The reception we get in different places when we go to perform. The reception and warmth is amazing especially when you haven't been there before.

Jesse We've been dreaming of these moments for such a long time, so it's cool to share these dreams with people.
