A QUICK CHAT WITH DAHLIA RAY

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Bonfire’

It’s about my mum’s best friend Jan, who was a friend that became family. Jan is the oldest survivor of cystic fibrosis in Australian history. Her funeral was a big party because she outlived all expectations of her and fought right through until she was 65. Her attitude is something that has inspired us all and inspired this song.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, Sia and Powderfinger. I took something from each of them. I love how Sia always has massive optimistic chorus’. I love Joni’s vocabulary. Dolly’s energy. Powderfinger’s swag. One of my absolute favourites is “My Kind of Scene”.

What’s the creative process like for you?

It always changes. The song’s melody, energy and lyrics came down at once on this occasion yay, and then I refined the lyrics in the verses a few times. This song wanted to come out but usually I experiment with beats and chords first.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

Ooooh lol. Ummm. No, it’s fine. There are pros and cons in everything, but every rejection only makes me want to be a better writer because at the end of the day I love what I do, and that’s all that matters. I also really love Australian music, so the scene isn't all bad.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

I can’t picture it. I think I'd be somewhere with 10 kids. LOL. I love kids second to music.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?

Flume, Vance Joy or Powderfinger Why? Coz I reckon something different could pop up and I like different. I also think each of those artists are incredible.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Never give up and take constructive criticism on board. It’s ok not to know everything right from the get-go..:)

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

Most interesting person I’ve ever met was Kate Moss at a train station in London, high off her head. She was rude but my friends and I loved it, because Kate Moss was a bitch to us. Lol.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

I guess that depends on how this song goes. Maybe. Lol.
