A Quick Chat With Two Times Shy

Meanjin/Brisbane emo revivalists, Two Times Shy, have just dropped their debut EP ‘It Looks Better Than It Sounds’. Despite the title of the EP, we can confirm that it sounds great, but they do look good too. The 5-track EP have the band breaking down their guard, exploring love and loss of relationships. Pulling on heartstrings the EP is packed with high-energy pop-punk riffs, despairing narratives and heartfelt pop-punk ballads that will have you in touch with your inner emo. We caught up with the band to find out more about the EP, the band and more.

Can you tell us what this EP means to the band and what you want people to take away from it?

This EP is very special to us as it’s our first major release! Every song was written from personal experiences, so it is an EP that’s quite close to our hearts!

We always love listening to music where we are able to put ourselves in the situation being sung about and feel what they feel; relating it to our own experiences and circumstances. So if our listeners are also able to do the same or feel like they connect on a personal level to our music, that’s exactly what we aim for.

Who were some of your influences when producing this EP and why?

Some of our main influences when producing this EP included State Champs, Mayday Parade and Neck Deep.

What was the creative process for the band, from writing through to recording this EP?

When writing the songs for this EP, we started out on an acoustic guitar, figuring out a melody, then worked with that melody and wrote lyrics to it. We would sit there and speak gibberish at times until something of value and substance came about. Doug was always so great at writing a chorus or hook first.

When recording all the songs for this EP, we started with pre-pro with our amazing producer, Jordan Bain, to make sure the song was finished or up to a standard that we were happy with. Then we moved onto recording demos. Once those demos were finished, it was onto drum tracking. After that we tracked bass, then lead and rhythm guitars, ending with vocals. They were then edited and sent off to our mixer and masterer, Luke Palmer.

If the band could collaborate with any artist or band, who would it be and why?

We would LOVE to collaborate with the likes of State Champs or Mayday Parade.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you guys have?
Jaden loves a bit of photography, videography and editing when he’s not working on music. The rest of our creative outlet/s consist of just music.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Some local bands we think you should check out include a 5 piece outfit called Grizzlyshark, a new 4 piece called Morningside and some great young lads in Stood Shy.

Winter or summer and why?

We prefer the cold weather of winter! Being able to warm up with lots of clothes (better fashion) or under a blanket.

What else do you have planned for 2023?

We have our EP launch show on April 14th at TomCat in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, followed by more music that we have scheduled to release later this year.
