A Quick Chat with Set Mo

How would you describe the Set Mo project to a new listener?

A coupla best buds from Sydney who make electronic/house music that makes you feel things.

You’ve just released your sophomore album, ‘Flux’ (congrats!). Describe it in a couple of sentences.

Thank you! After three years in the making it feels so good to have it out in the world. Flux is an exploration of change and its continuous nature. Going into the writing process we had a clear vision for what we wanted this album to be about. We’d had a huge few years both together as Set Mo as well as individually. This album is about how change is constant, some of it is by choice and some of it just happens and we have no say in it. What we realised though is that what we always have control over is how we view and respond to change.

What were some key creative influences that helped shape this album?

This album was written during a time when we couldn’t play shows due to covid restrictions. This meant we didn’t have outside stimuli of travelling and playing shows regularly and feeding off that energy that comes with that. Looking back on it now, that definitely affected the music we were making. A lot of it has an introspective feel to it. We’d also moved into a new studio just before we started writing this record. It’s the first studio that we’ve had that doesn’t have any natural light which I think subconsciously meant that some of the music is darker, more banging than stuff we’ve made before.

You’ve got some killer guest vocals on the album, do you have any stories of how they came about?

The vocalists on this album are a combination of old friends and then some newer people we met on the Flux journey but we’re already fans of. Jack Froggatt from Mansionair who sings on Let Yourself Go was a key collaborator on this album. We ended up writing a few songs with Jack as he was right into the concept behind the album and it was awesome for us to have an eternal source to work through ideas and concepts with. Jack's an amazing songwriting and pays meticulous attention when it comes to lyrics.

Sumner was an act we’d come across and instantly liked their vibe. When we wrote Second Line we we’re trying to think of the right voice to fit that song and portray the meaning behind it and Chloe bloody nailed it. We’d never met them in person and theyre based in Tasmania so we had a few zooms and straight away got along and then Second  Line was done.

What is one thing you hope listeners take away from Flux?

That it’s ok (and important) to take a second to feel all the feels, good or bad. Life can throw some gnarly surprises our way but remember there’s always tomorrow and something that might seem like the worst thing that’s ever happened to you could very well be the start of a new and very exciting chapter.

You recently supported Fat Boy Slim for a run of stadium shows. Tell us about some of your favourite moments!

Firstly, meeting him in person was a real pinch ourselves moment. Then just playing our first arena show to such an amazing group of diehard music lovers. Jumping up and playing a bunch of unreleased tracks from the album and watching thousands of people dance to them was pretty skitz as well haha.

When can we catch your next live set?

Do you have any plans to celebrate now that it’s out in the world?

Definitely an epic feed and then straight back into the studio for us! Then playing this record out at shows will be the real celebration.
