A Quick Chat With Dawson

Dawson (Angus Dawson) has made an introspective return with a compelling double single that featured the heartfelt track 'Will You See Me Now?' and the mesmerizing b-side 'Hovea'. Both songs showcase Dawson's talent for blending experimental electronic production with pop sensibilities, resulting in a distinctive and emotive sound. With support from acclaimed platforms like Triple J and Red Bull, Dawson's extensive career saw him sharing the stage with artists such as Broods and Emma Louise. 'Will You See Me Now?' serves as a testament to Dawson's songwriting, pulsing with emotion and dynamic instrumentation, while 'Hovea' enchanted with its ambient instrumental beauty. We’ve caught up with Dawson to find out more:

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

My music these days is a glorified diary entry. Each song is a time stamp of how I was feeling at a particular time. I don’t think that’s overly unique to me but it was a new process for me to resign to that level of honesty in my writing.

Who are some of your influences and why?

I have many…too many! More recently I’ve followed the rise of Fred again and I really enjoy the way that he communicates about his music. He’s only ever concerned with the feeling and the expression of a sound and while the technicalities matter, their time and place is at the end of the creative process, not the start. I really got around that idea

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

Funny you ask, this song was a challenge I set myself one day to spark some creativity. I gave myself one day to get as far as I could with a song and Will you see me now? was the result of that challenge. The track was written and recored (90%) in a single day.

What do you think makes a great song?

Because it was written and recorded so fast, I think it has a very cohesive sound and just makes sense, rather than agonising over every creative decision for weeks. I also recorded every part for this track and playing them back to back in a lighting fast recording session was a challenge, but a lot of fun.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Given I have tattoos to profess my love for this man’s music, it would have to Bon Iver, no surprises there.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

Who has time to do other things?! But seriously, I’m a music teacher as my day job and I love it with all of my heart.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

As a teacher, I’m going to shout out some of my students. Go and Check out Siena Rebelo and Sophie Lilah, you’re welcome.

Winter or summer and why?

Both, why be unhappy for half the year? Love the rain just as much as the beach.

What else do you have planned for 2023?

Well, having had an extensive break from the stage I think I’m ready to get a live show together and start playing again, that’ll be a huge step for me so bare with!
