A Quick Chat With Lucy Lorenne & The Early Birds

Melbourne's vibrant indie pop rock ensemble, Lucy Lorenne & The Early Birds, just released their nostalgic pop anthem 'Tamagotchi Nights' along with a charming music video. Having already marked their presence with the debut EP 'Summers Gone', Lucy Lorenne and her band evolved their endearing sound in this power pop creation, co-written with Matt Hargreaves and producer Ben Oldland. The track, adorned with 8-bit synth intros and a mix of upbeat guitars, took a colorful journey through post-millennial nostalgia.

The accompanying visual masterpiece, designed with Mediaroid, encapsulated the Y2K spirit, showcasing the band in a dreamy setting of the era. 'Tamagotchi Nights' was a heartwarming blend of innocence and maturity that resonated with audiences of all ages.

We caught up with Lucy Lorenne to find out more about the track and her band.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

Tamagotchi Nights is my boppy, scream-your-lungs-out, pop debut all about missing your childhood. It’s really something to get people dancing and crying at the same time. When you’re a kid, all you want to do is grow up but in no time you’re grown up and wishing you weren’t. I wanted to write a fun little banger that is about processing that very real realisation that you’ve grown up and the innocent days of childhood are gone. And if it gets people feeling nostalgic, reminiscing about their own childhoods and all the fun and heartbreak that entailed, then I hope the song serves as some much needed communal therapy for ya’ll!

Who are some of your influences and why?

When we were writing Tamagotchi Nights, considering the whole nostalgia vibe of the track, we really wanted to tap into that pop-rock sound that has had a bit of a revival recently. We were loving seeing pop artists like Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Baby Queen, Maisie Peters etc dipping their toes into those sounds so we were super keen to jump on board too! But I can’t forget my indie-folk roots, especially when it comes to lyric writing. I have a lot of love for our homegrown artists like Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly and Gretta Ray who have been huge influences on my songwriting!

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

I approach writing in many different ways but what usually drives a writing session for me, is a theme. I always want to convey a particular feeling in my songs and really make people feel that too. So I spend time working on creating melodies, chord progressions, lyrics and sounds that really match that feeling. I then take it to The Early Birds to add their flare and voila!

What do you think makes a great song?

As both artist and audience, I’m really drawn to music that speaks to me. Sounds cliche I know, but I want music to communicate something, even if it’s just a feeling. My favourite songs are those that can so perfectly and uniquely articulate how they — and YOU — are feeling.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

I would LOVE to collab with Stella Donnelly! Apart from the fact that I adore her music and feel like I really relate to how much FUN she has on stage, the messages in her songs really resonate with me and what I stand for so if there was anyone I’d want to shout those feelings with, it would be her!

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

You can sometimes catch me performing in musical theatre and acting on screen! You could also find me roller skating or doing yoga!

Who are some local bands we should check out?

You have to check out the amazing Paraquay (might notice some familiar faces in there), Immy Owusu just released a killer album and I’m a new fangirl of Mathilde Anne's!

Winter or summer and why?

Have you heard the track? It’s definitely summer for me!

What else do you have planned for 2023?

We have lots in the works! More shows, more writing... more tamagotchi nights! Keep watch!
