A Quick Chat with Noah Bates

Where are you from? A little about your musical history?

I was born in The Netherlands and spent my childhood there and in Malaysia. My family is originally from Melbourne, however my parents would move around for work and we ended up in Brisbane a couple years ago.
I originally started out as a drummer and pianist, I always wanted to sing and write my own songs but I think a small fear of failure kept me from it. I started playing guitar a couple years ago too and haven’t stopped since. I also started to learn how to produce music in 2019 and it started to really pick up these last two years.

Tell us a little about the song?

I started writing the song last year when I came up with the chorus melody and acoustic guitar part you hear at the start of the song. I had the hook line stuck in my head for a while before I was able to finish the rest of the chorus, from there the song gradually grew and I produced the rest of the track. It went through a couple different iterations before I was happy with the final version as it was pretty close to what I was hearing in my head when I thought of the song.

What do you think makes a great song?

I think a great song connects with people above all else, it makes you happy or sad or fills you with joy and makes you want to dance depending on the song. Great songs vary person to person as we all have our unique tastes but they will always leave an impact on the listener and be memorable

What have been YOUR favourite songs of 2023 so far?

Bridge - Lottie McLeod Touching Yourself - The Japanese House I'm Just Ken - Ryan Gosling

Winter or summer and why?

I think I prefer winter as I like to layer up with sweaters or hoodies and wear my uggs but I also like a beach day in the sun and going for a swim. If I had to choose one it would probably be winter.

What shows are you currently binging?

I recently just finished binging The Bear and that’s definitely become one of my favourite shows.
I'm also rewatching Modern Family and Parks and Recreation for the 100th time

What’s in store for the rest of the year?

There may be a couple of gigs coming up and maybe another track on the way before the end of the year too. Stay tuned!!!
