A Quick Chat With Ribs

Hailing from the vibrant indie-pop scene of Boorloo (Perth, AUS), Ribs is an extraordinary band known for creating raw and emotive music that strikes a chord with audiences. Their latest single, 'Claws,' released on Friday, August 4, is a cathartic anthem that delves into the journey of healing from intimate partner violence. Led by the visionary Georgina Cramond, Ribs' music tackles challenging topics like mental health, social power constructs, and trauma, with a passion for connecting on a deep level with their listeners. We caught up with her to find out more about the track, her creative process and more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

Claws is about coming through the aftermath of painful circumstances and growing stronger. Its about taking ownership over the difficult and jagged parts of your history and learning what you will no longer accept.

Who are some of your influences and why?

Courtney Barnett – for her brilliant lyricism and story telling

Sharon Van Etten - for her beautiful melodies and harmony

And Stella Donnelley for pure fearlessness

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

I usually write the lyrics and piano parts locked away in my room, then I bring them to the band and we jam it out and share ideas and make demo’s until we are happy with where its at. Then we record with Ryan Brennan who gives us really great production ideas and support to get the most out of the song.

What do you think makes a great song?

I’m a sucker for lyrics, so anything that feels authentic, emotional and intimate.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Does boygenius need a fourth member?? They are my dream team of song-writers and it would be so beautiful to collaborate with such powerful femme artists.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I love making chaotic craft. The glass claws in the poster are evidence of this but also just beads and embroidery and making fun things.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Veruca Moon, Joan and the Giants, Stacey Ann, Green Pools, Grace Sanders, Smol Fish, Angie Colman, all incredible local artists.

Winter or summer and why?

Winter because layers are fun and my car has no air-conditioning.

What else do you have planned for 2023?

Claws is the first song off a larger body of work, which is due to be released at the end of the year, a collection of songs about healing. We are also planning a very special launch show and regional tour to support the extended release!
