A Playlist by Max Lawrence

Hey I’m Max Lawrence, and here is a fun, dark sexy playlist of music that inspired my latest single ‘Speak In tongues’ about wanting to kiss someone in the club but having no idea what to say. Expect hot grooves, gritty synths and a fun vocal. Sensuality and scripture. Get into it!

Adam & Steve - Dorian Electra

Dorian Electra is unlike any other artist right now, their hyper pop critiques archetypes of masculinity and gender with super forward thinking production flair and I live for it. This track is a re-telling of the creation story of Adam and Eve through a queer lens, and it goes HARD.

Judas - Lady Gaga

I mean how can I sit here and talk about biblical references in hard hitting pop and not mention the living legend herself with this absolute steamroller Judas?! The drama! The spoken word bridge breakdown?! The nerve of Gaga never fails to amaze me. A massive inspiration.

She’s My Collar (feat Kali Uchis) - Gorillaz

I’ve been a huuuuge Gorillaz fan since I was very little, I’ve always been amazed how Damon Albarn manages to genre hop so incredibly well and include so many amazing features, and still obtain a distinct and recognisable sound. This track is secretive, kinky and a fun groove.

When Doves Cry - Prince

Another of the greats. When Doves Cry is one of my all time favourite songs, and definitely a big inspiration for Speak In Tongues. Prince’s drum sounds are so iconic and are instantly recognisable, and when producing the track, Rino and I couldn’t help but make them as Prince-y as possible. A timeless classic honestly.

Cry Baby - Roisin Murphy

This song is SO gay. It sounds like a late 70’s Patrick Cowley track and it takes me straight into the club. This mood has definitely been my escapism in lockdown when I’d much rather be getting my life on the dance floor, but artists like Roisin have been getting me through, and helping me imagine how great it will be to be in that club once all of this is over.
