A Quick Chat With Abbey Lane

Sydney-based singer-songwriter Abbey Lane has just dropped her new indie rock/pop single, ‘State Of Mind’. With 12 years of musical experience, Abbey has collaborated with notable artists like Sycco, Yung Bleu, and Tenille Arts. She made a significant impact at Sydney’s first SXSW conference last year and has opened for acts such as Diesel, Hollie Col, and Little Quirks. ‘State Of Mind’ precedes her upcoming debut EP, ‘Afterthoughts’, set for release on Wednesday, June 12. We recently caught up with Abbey to delve deeper into her latest track, her musical influences, and more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

This song was written like a letter of the things you didn't get to say to someone that impacted your life, and the pain that comes with watching you grow apart. This was such a fun song to write and it's my favourite one to play live, so I hope people enjoy dancing to it as much as I do on stage.

Who are some of the band's influences, and why?

I'm massively influenced by the Australian female indie-rock/pop scene. In particular I find myself influenced by Middle Kids, Gretta Ray and Kita Alexander.

What's the creative process for the band, from writing through to recording?

I write all of my songs on my own in my makeshift home studio. Especially with my upbeat songs, I like to create demos so I can hear the full band vibe of it before I take it to my backing band to hear it in proper context.

What do you think makes a great song?

I'm always drawn to lyrics of a song and love when artists can write about the same feelings that so many other songs are writing about, but in different ways or perspectives. I'm also a sucker for a good hooky melody though.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Holly Humberstone for sure, I love everything she creates.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I love doing pottery, even though my skills are very limited.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

I'm currently loving Joan & The Giants, WALTA and Miramar!

Winter or summer and why?

Summer for sure, the beach is my happy place.

What else do you have planned for 2024?

I'll be dropping an EP soon on June 12th, followed by a tour in July/August, so keep watch of this space!
