A Quick Chat With Alana Jagt

With her bold blend of indie folk, rock and old-school Americana, Adelaide’s Alana Jagt has released her debut album ‘Goodbye Grote Bollen’. For those unfamiliar with Jagt, she has played festivals such as Bigsound, been on national tours with Abbe May and The Roving Commission; supported beloved Australian artists including Paul Dempsey, Archie Roach, Thelma Plum, Aly Barter, Killing Heidi and Henry Wagons and more. This highly anticipated debut album has been in the making for some time now, so we caught up with Jagt to find out more!

Can you tell us what this album means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

The album is really saying goodbye to songs that have been in our set rotation for a long time, 'Goodbye Grote Bollen' translates to 'goodbye big bulbs', these songs are my big bulbs and I'm saying goodbye to them, its almost like a cleanse I guess. I just hope that people like the songs or identify with some of them!

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

It changes from song to song, but I tend to come up with progressions and melodies really easily but stew on lyrics for a long long time. With this record its taken a very very long time to get to the finished product, but we recorded all the beds live in studio and overdubs at various home studios - the songs were already mostly fleshed out from being in the bands live set for some time before hitting the studio.

What do you think makes a great song?

Interesting melody, feeling, lyrical content

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

There are many but I guess the ultimate dream would be Sir Paul McCartney, he's such a creative force.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I like to do watercolours, dabble in amateur nature and gig photography, and gardening.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Teenage Joans, West Thebarton, Jess Johns Band, Ricky Albeck and the Belair Line Band, Empty Threats, Aaron Thomas, Ryan Martin John, Street Legal, Placement.

Winter or summer and why?

I actually prefer spring and autumn to both, the weather is milder for outdoor activities in those months and I'm an outdoor activity type of person. Summer above winter though, love me some daylight savings.

What else do you have planned for the year?

We will be heading back for a show in Melbourne in December and hopefully another regional vic show around that time TBC. Our album launches are in Adelaide on November 18 (Adelaide Hills) and November 25 (Adelaide CBD) which should be fun.
