A quick chat with Albert Salt

Hey Albert, congratulations on the release of "Daylesford" and the EP announcement. Can you tell us a bit about "Daylesford" and the story behind it?

Thank you so much! Daylesford was written immediately after the end of a long term relationship, and is really as raw and honest as I’ve ever been (which has honestly been terrifying to put out into the world.) But I think that’s a good thing. Musically it’s very influenced by trip-hop but with pop sensibilities and makes heavy use of ambient synths, strings and hip-hop drums.

Your new EP '25 Not Doing Alright' has been a long time in the making, what has that journey and process been like?

Well it all really kicked off with Daylesford at the beginning of last year which set the tone for the record and I guess is really the genesis of it all. I wrote the rest of it in an extremely busy and creative burst in December last year. 2019 was an extremely defining period in my life and gave me a hell of a lot to write about. This year was spent fine tuning it all and polishing it all up.

Reflection, introspection and personal growth appear to be consistent themes across the singles we've heard, would it be fair to say that this is a coming of age release for you?

Absolutely, they're really the central themes of it all and I know it's very classic to be in your mid 20’s and have this period of introspection but I mean a lot of artists have put out their greatest work around this age. I think it’s definitely a universal feeling that everyone goes through and can relate to.

Playing a lot of shows and touring throughout 2019 became somewhat of the catalyst for this new body of work. Are you looking forward to performing again in the new year and do you have any plans on the gig front?

I spent a lot of time in 2019 playing shows with my other project Juno Disco and it definitely has got me itching to play some Albert Salt gigs! I’m in the process of rejigging my live show at the moment which is very exciting. Nothing booked at the moment as we’ve just opened back up in Melbourne but I’ll be hopefully playing very soon!

So far, we've heard three singles from the EP, what can we expect from the remaining songs on '25 Not Doing Alright'?

Even Out, 25 and Daylesford are I think the lyrical pillars of the EP. The other songs follow on from the single lyrically but also sound completely different. My favourite piece of music I’ve ever written is on this EP which is called ‘Unoit’ which I can’t bloody wait for people to hear.
