A Quick Chat With Amanduh

A lifelong storyteller, Melbourne-based singer Amanduh brings her latest tale alive in the form of indie-pop single ‘Sparks’. Earlier this year, Amanduh released her debut EP 'Pantsuits', a collection of tracks that followed the confident and sizzling pop path that she displayed on her first two singles, released back in 2022. Now, with charming guitar and a sweet Australian accent, this indie-pop song plays on the familiar with a unique charm that stands out from the crowd. With her unique lyrical flow and soothing, smooth acoustic guitar, Amanduh creates a personal, close-up soundscape blooming with authenticity. We caught up with Amanduh to find out more about the track, her creative process and more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

Sparks is extra special to me, because I wrote it about my friend who's in a pretty bad relationship, but it's written as if they've broken up, which is ultimately whats best. I wanted this to be a fun song, which it is, so listeners can have a groove, but it's also a friendly reminder that you don't have to settle if you're just not feeling it.

Who are some of the band's influences, and why?

I have so many! With sparks in particular, Maisie Peters was a pretty weighty muse. Both instrumentally and lyrically.

What's the creative process for the band, from writing through to recording?

There isn't an exact cookie cutter process for me, every song is different. Sparks I wrote in about 15 minutes on my kitchen floor with a guitar in hand. I was meant to send my producer a different song, but instead fell in love with this song so hard, I ended up sending him the very first recording I took. We smashed it out in studio over 2 days and it was like we were thinking exactly the same thing every step of the way! Was a very seamless process for this song, it just produced its self!

What do you think makes a great song?

I think ultimately anything that either makes you feel something, or anything that makes you want to move (physically).

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

This is a fantastic question, but so hard to answer, but i think in this moment; Florence Welsh, from Florence and the Machine! Every single thing about this woman is not only mesmerising but she's an incredible performer and really just embraces all parts of the music she creates which is ultimately super magical!

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I am a super creative person and can't sit still, I would say rollerskating, pole dancing and physical arts and crafts are my go to! Anything where I can have some music going and i can have a dance works for me!

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Better Taylor and Kat Edwards have been on repeat for me!

Winter or summer and why?

Summer! While I do like the winter, because i can have my fireplace going, ultimately Summer has my heart. I feel like it's just more accommodating to mt everyday life!

What else do you have planned for 2024?

I'm in the studio (literally as i write this) and I'm recording a bunch of new stuff! I think maybe another single, or two? A show? You'll have to wait and see!
