A QUICK CHAT WITH BAILEY RODRIGUES

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Who Dis’?

Me and Matt are currently working on an EP together, with the whole idea of doing something different that no one in Australia is doing. So Who dis was inspired by us wanting to do something against the norm that brings good vibes and that summer feel.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I'm influenced by everything around me and what's happening in my life so if I'm going through some tough times my music usually reflects that. Who Dis was written and recorded on release day of my previous song so we were absolutely buzzing with good vibes.

What’s the creative process like for you?

It comes and goes in waves, sometimes I just put instrumentals on and freestyle and try to catch a vibe, sometimes it'll happen within the first couple or sometimes I don't vibe with anything and just get some much needed freestyle practice in. I usually like to nail a good chorus or hook first and then that just lets the verses flow easily. For Who Dis though i actually had the verses done first and then we nailed the hook so it's always different.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

I wish there was more  trusted guidance / education  for new and upcoming artists, it's a big scary industry when you first begin and for some that could really deter them from chasing their dreams. I've seen artists more talented than me not chase their goals for this very reason. That's been my whole goal behind starting RODRIGUES RECORDS. I want to pave the way so I can eventually bring on these artists and give them the support they need to be able to achieve their goals, while still allowing them full creative control over their music.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

I would probably be really empty hahah that sounds really sad but it's true, music has helped me through some of the toughest times in my life and it has been with me through some of the best as well. It holds a special place in my life and couldn't do without it.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

G-Eazy is #1 on my list for that. He's the whole reason I found my love for rapping and why I started making music. Just to get him on one of my tracks has been the goal since I started. It's one of my “I made it” moments and I can't wait.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Don't let anyone stop you from chasing your goals. It sounds cliche but there is going to be so much negativity and doubt you just have to back yourself 100% and keep moving forward.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

G-Eazy takes this one as well. Meeting him for the short 5 minutes in Brisbane back in 2016 still motivates me and pushes me to chase the dream.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

Look im always keen to perform so if any festival organizers wanna put me on their line up im in. On a serious note no solid plans at the moment but we do have a live event/ listening party planned for our EP coming out which will be in the middle of January.
