A QUICK CHAT WITH BINO BLIP

What is one sentence that best describes the 'Bino Blip' project and moniker?’

What a freak.

We noticed a tonal shift with XANDAN compared to your previous works. What is XANDAN about?

Xandan is about addiction from two perspectives - my own experiences with addiction and what I have seen someone else go through. It can be tough to ask for help when you’re dealing with addiction, but it can also be hard to know what to do when someone you care about is struggling with it.

Is collaboration an important part of your creative process? Why so?

Yeah, definitely. I enjoy working with people who are ahead of me in their creative pursuits. It pushes me to work harder and allows me to learn from them at the same time. I think it’s important to get creative feedback from people you trust. There is none of that when I am in my home studio writing and making demos, so I love it when I get to make art with other like-minded freaks. For Xandan, both the music and the visuals would have turned out very differently if I hadn’t worked with the people that I did.

Can you lead us through some of the visual inspirations behind the music video?

We were going for a utilitarian, Eastern European vibe. Building out the world and narrative of BB has been important to me from the beginning, so we wanted to create visuals that you get lost in. When you’re wrestling with mental health, you often miss the beauty around you due to being trapped in your own head. This is why we chose to shoot scenes incorporating beautiful local scenery. The hazmats and gas masks provide an interesting juxtaposition against this.

You regularly work with directors Kids of Bill, what is your funniest memory on set?

There have been a few because we’re all proper weirdos and my mates have been in all the MVs we’ve made so far. Recently, we put Sam (Kids of Bill director) in a jock strap and gimp mask for an unreleased music video.

The music video was premiered at CLIPPED's music video festival last week at Ritz Cinema, what was it like sharing the video on the big screen?

I think we were all just relieved that the clip didn’t fritz out on the big screen. It’s sick that the CLIPPED.TV team value showcasing music videos. Not many people care about music videos anymore, but the KOB guys and I love them, so it was nice to be amongst people who care as much as we do.

What is one thing you hope people take with them after listening to XANDAN?

That no matter how far down the rabbit hole you’ve gone, there’s always something you can do. It’s hard to see a way out when you’re stuck in that life. I think the hardest thing is asking for help or even recognising that you want or need it in the first place. For those who have a loved one struggling with drug addiction, just remember that it is a mental health issue. No one sets out to be a drug addict on purpose.
