A QUICK CHAT WITH BLUSH’KO

HEY BLUSH’KO!! FIRST OFF, CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOUR SINGLE ‘Call My Name’?

‘Call My Name’ is a song that I wrote when I was feeling very vulnerable in a romantic situation that I was in.. I was learning how to be open and understand how to give more of myself, but ultimately feeling unwanted at times or like a stranger. So I wanted to express all those feelings in this song.. lyrically, melodically and sonically.. I wanted to make this song feel sexy, but also have that eerie feeling of an unresolved romance. So I teamed up with my homie Sergiio (who is a wizard at everything) and we came up with this beautiful piece of music.. so big thanks to Serg for getting involved in this one with me..

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES AND HOW DO THEY AFFECT YOUR SONGWRITING?

My influences vary a lot.. I have a strange way of writing.. Because sometimes I write how I feel and delve into every emotion, verses’ sometimes, when I hear a story about something or someone else, I like to explore more of that through different lenses, that aren’t necessarily my own (and dissect how I think the other person is feeling). Either way.. I just try to be as authentic as possible.. And I listen to my body and what it requires.. Sometimes I can’t think of anything and my body and heart tell me to go play soccer.. Half way through the game or the session I get an idea.. so I really love just going with how I feel, because it will definitely spark an idea as apposed to forcing an idea just because I am sitting in the studio..

YOU’RE AN INCREDIBLE VOCALIST SO APART FROM THE PIPES WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE INSTRUMENT / EQUIPMENT PIECE?

I personally love playing the guitar and learning it has definitely been a joy in my life… buuuuutttt… the Flute.. If I could have my friend Erica follow me around on my day to day activities whilst playing the flute.. I would be in Heaven.. I also think it adds such a beautiful layer to music that doesn’t get the attention or love that it truly deserves.. I will learn it one day and just randomly drop a solo mid set..

CD’S OR VINYL?

I am a cd man because I driiiivveee a lot.. so in terms of a convenience standpoint I’d be silly to choose Vinyl.. Also I have a buddy who is obsessed with Vinyl (Sammy) and honestly.. I don’t see the appeal haha.. actually quite annoying.. but aesthetically the Vinyl is much more pleasing and has this certain ‘cool’ feel around it.. that I can never dispute.. Might even make a run of vinyls for my next project just because haha

IF YOU HAD TO LIVE OFF ONE COMBINATION SANDWICH AND DRINK COMBO WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A perfect question, must have a perfect answer.. French Stick cut open, followed by Australian Vintage Cheddar distributed evenly, followed by a bed of Turkey slices, followed by Mild Cacciatore Salami, followed by San Danielle Prosciutto, followed by Kewpie mayo (or mayo of choice), then you add these little roast peppers that are cut so thinly, so you don’t overpower the rest and topped off with some fresh Rocket (Roquette) and for me personally a side of water to wash that down.. or a Sunkist (depending on how naughty I’m feeling haha)  but defs water

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY DURING THE LOCKDOWNS?

No traffic.. Absolutely empty roads to drive on.. My God it was pure delight.. This coming from a bloke who drives everywhere.. But on a serious note.. For me it was understanding my emotional patience and allowing myself to feel things I’ve never felt.. I remember when it first happened.. I was on a walk with my partner and it just hit me.. so that was pretty special for me.

IF YOU COULD ADD SOMETHING TO THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY TO IMPROVE IT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

More care in our showcases.. Actually turn up and show up for upcoming artists, they are already nervous as hell and the last thing they need is for the industry people to look unenthused or be constantly talking just because they have never heard their songs before or about the artist themselves.. They expect these young kids to become front men, yet they show zero respect at times..

WHICH HOGWARTS HOUSE WOULD YOU BE SORTED INTO?

Well I’ve always had this theory that everyone thinks that if they were in a movie or if life was a movie they’d be the star.. So I’d love to say Gryffindor but I’mma go with Hufflepuff because they just chill and I gotta be true to my Lazy Boys

I HAVE SEEN A BEER BOTTLE WITH THE INSIDE OF AN ELBOW… DO YOU HAVE ANY WEIRD TALENTS?

I can do the splits very comfortably and have impeccable aim with a soccer ball especially when it requires hitting moving targets (my friends haha)

WHO WAS YOUR FIRST CELEBRITY MUSICIAN CRUSH?

Brittany Spears.. not even mad about that haha..

ON THE BACK OF SUCH A HARD TIME IN THE INDUSTRY, WHAT IS SOMETHING TRULY BEAUTIFUL ABOUT BEING AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST YOUR FANS MIGHT NOT THINK ABOUT?

I would encourage everyone to understand that whether you are signed or independent, there is beauty in both.. Being and independent artist doesn’t make you less successful or less important (just trying to break that stigma that everyone needs to get signed).. I love that I can control all my releases, schedules, shows, really whatever I desire.. and I love that I can find my fans directly and trust that they will have my back always.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BLUSH’KO?

FLORAL SURBOARD, BABY!!! My first full length album.. so excited to start this release process and show you guys what has been going on in my head and life over the last year or so..
