A quick chat with BOLEYN
Firstly, hey, how are you? Are you currently working on anything at the moment?
Hey, I’m good! Haven’t had my first coffee for the day yet, but there’s still time. I’m actually in the middle of the X-Change songwriting camp which is running at Studios 301 this week, in collaboration with Mushroom Publishing & Ditto Music. It’s been wonderful getting to work with the other artists on the roster and Danielle & Lynley have been so bloody welcoming :)
Tell us more about ‘Violence’ - what inspired the song and also, the video?
Do you see yourself continuing to self-direct your video clips?
Violence is all about communicating physical desire in your relationship. What do you want? What are you comfortable with? How do you make that known?
I actually wrote the first line of the song in New York, while the actual concept and chorus came together after a dinner party in Sydney.
As for the video, I knew that I wanted the visual to echo the song in the same way that the song echoes the emotions I’m singing about. I took inspiration from the loud colours and styling from Troye Sivan’s Bloom music video and wanted to play with the idea of fruit as this pure thing, being destroyed.
I definitely want to keep a hand in directing my films, it’s important to me that i’m curating the project and accurately bringing to life the visuals I have in my head, but i’d love to collaborate and have a creative director assisting and adding their touches.
What’s one thing being a musician has taught you about yourself?
No one is ever going to back you as much as you back yourself, so it’s important to be your loudest champion.
What do you want to see more of in the Australian music scene?
I’d love to see more opportunities for First Nations and gender diverse artists. Things like showcases or writing workshops are incubators of talent and opportunity and to see those things available for a wider array of artists would be great.
Forget about 2020, whats the plan for 2021? Any goals you’re hoping to kick?
Hopefully get out and have a dance! I’ve got a new track coming early in the new year, my 25th birthday and the X-Change Showcase - it’s safe to say i’ll be a busy boy.
Have you thought about the first place you want to book a holiday to once things hopefully start to pick up to being normal again?
I’ll actually be in Byron Bay early next year, but further abroad i’m dying to see LA and Manhattan again.
Okay last question. You get to form a superband - Who do you pick?
Troye Sivan, Conan Gray, Lana del Rey & The 1975. Huge.
