A Quick Chat with Broken Waves

What is the song about? Did it come from a particular experience?

The song was inspired by toxic masculinity, specifically the recent attention in the media regarding the rise of misogyny in social media content. It is about not wanting to participate in this phenomena and asking the open ended question of what else? We were finding ourselves trapped in this contrast of being told not to pay attention to the rise of these male influencers preaching a backwards mentality whilst also asking what is the better option? Who are the role models that the younger generation needs, young men in particular.

Musically, what does ‘Do You Understand?’ sound like?

This is the furthest we’ve gone into the funk direction, all with the intention of using funk elements in a more aggressive and bombastic manner. Some say indie-funk, we say spicy indie-funk.

Who did you work with on this track and what was the process like?

We worked closely with our engineer James Brown. We went for a much more hands on approach with the production compared to our previous songs and as a result allowed us to shape the song into a much more personalised project. The experiment was such a success, we have decided to continue working as co-producers on all of our music from now on.

Did you have any musical inspirations for this song?

The main influence has always been Foals, however as of recent our musical evolution has been inspired by the 1975. We really admire their extreme attention to detail in their production as well as the sense of excitement and carefree fun. We’re feeling confident in even our most out there ideas and we love bringing an experimental edge to pop music.

What is your favourite part/lyric?

We really like some of the verse lyrics such as ‘born to slay, forced to serve’ & ‘bite down on that red pill baby, aren’t you brave’. The satirical angle in the verses really help drive the message of the song home we feel. Musically, the back half of the track is hard to not be the favourite.

What do you hope people will take away from the song?

Mainly we hope people have fun with it. There is a very important message to be taken from the song’s lyrics but if the listener is only interested on a surface level then we hope we have given them a feel-good fun & fresh funk experience.

Tell us about your musical journey so far?

We have slowly been honing our sound more & more over the past few years and have really found our grounding in what we are doing at the moment. The blend of indie & funk has been around for ages but we feel we are navigating in a space that hasn’t been explored too much yet & are excited to see where it takes us. We are very grateful for all the support local & abroad that has been shown to us over our journey so far and are so excited for everyone to see and hear what we have in store.
