A Quick Chat with Bromham
What is the EP about? Did it come from a particular experience?
The EP is really about having a good community around you in tough times. It was born out of a difficult time for me and my wife Hannah and also for my sister Jess. The end result is a reflection on how thankful we are to have loving, supportive and encouraging friends and family.
Musically, what does the EP sound like?
It’s very much communal folk music. 13 people bringing their ideas and influences and creating something together. The release celebrates, contemplates, grieves, and encourages but it all feels very warm.
Who did you work with on this EP and what was the process like?
We wrote all the instrumentation together and then recorded it all live together. We tried to bring together all our different skills. One of our members runs choirs so she put together the choir part, the horns took the initial ideas and brought them to life with harmonies and extra bits, the rhythm section brought together the best of their initial ideas and made them fit together. In our eyes this communal style of writing creates the most unique and diverse songs and is the most fun and enjoyable way to create.
Did you have any musical inspirations for this EP?
So many! Haha. There’s a bit of afrobeat influence in the first track which is new for us. Also some film soundtrack influences in the second and third songs.
What is your favourite part/lyric in the song or on the EP?
The second chorus of “For Jess” is beautiful. The line “Life’s not a straight line, nobody’s in front or behind” has quite a nice message. The choir bit in “Adulthood” is cool and something completely new in our songs.
What do you hope people will take away from the song/EP?
Joy and hope. That good, loving, encouraging friends are the best.
