A Quick Chat with Bronte Alva

How are things? What’s been happening?

Great! Definitely feeling the pre-release anxiety haha!

What music have you been bumping lately?

Lots of Phoebe Bridgers, Julia Jacklin, Angie McMahon, WAAX, Jeff Buckley…

What are your biggest influences / icons as an artist?

Missy Higgins is an icon, legend, she is the moment. Julia Jacklin is my infatuation of course, how could she not be? Aretha Franklin is always on rotation too and Amy Winehouse never leaves.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

This song means the world to me as it’s one of the most honest things I have written. It is at it’s core, about insecurity. I want people to take away that it’s okay not to feel okay. Inadequacy is one of the most human thing we can feel. It’s man-made and taught. How can something not be enough when it just is. It’s enough to just exist and not buy into the bullshit that the world tells us we’re supposed to be.

If you had to explain your creative process in one word. What would it be?

Sporadic.

What do you think makes a great song?

An artist’s love for what they’re creating. We can feel when it’s something they love and it makes it 10 times better.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Probably Julia Jacklin, because obviously. Her songwriting is so impactful and beautifully honest. It connects with so many people. She is someone I’ll always be in awe of. She’s wonderfully human.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I have always loved film-making and acting. It’s something I’ll never let go of. I am also classically trained in piano and it always allows me to slow for a minute and clear my head. I can’t draw if my life depended on it but it’s fun!

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Denim on Her are an awesome band from Kiama, they’re still in High School and are absolutely smashing it! Lucky Day band put on an amazing show when we played together on the Central Coast on The Terrys’ tour. And GRXCE are getting a lot of love and well deserved, they’re sick!!

What else do you have planned for 2023?

You’ll have to wait and see! Lots of exciting things…
