A Quick Chat With Charlie Bedford

Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Daydream’?
My inspiration for Daydream lyrically came from a few different places, but the way I resonate most with it is to view it as an internal conflict about motivation. Musically is where the song started for me; it all just flowed.

What are your influences, and how do they affect your songwriting?
I have so many influences, and I try not to limit them by genre. I’ll go from alternative rock, to rap, to jazz, blues, punk, pop, reggae, surf, and anything in between. I like to think with my songwriting I can manage to blend all these sorts of influences into one sound and story.

What’s the creative process like for you?
Think up some music, have a jam, and write some lyrics or check my notes for one-liners and inspiration. I try to keep the process flowing quickly and naturally—if it’s not working, I just have to move on. It also has to be enjoyable and fun; otherwise, I’m not interested!

If you could change something about the Australian music industry, what would it be?
Besides some of the more business-based ideas, I’d love to see the general public of Australia embrace live music more. It’s such a magical thing, and you can have such a good time out—make some new friends, discuss music, and just enjoy. I love to see a room full of strangers connecting and enjoying such a fun and creative thing. I think it’s great!

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
I believe I’d find another vice, haha. Probably something like skateboarding. Why not both? Hard question though. My dad used to always say, “A day without music is like a day without sunshine!”

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?
There are so many artists I would absolutely love to collaborate with. I also really enjoy writing songs with people who aren’t musical at all—they always come up with such interesting and refreshing ideas! If I had to pick off the top of my head, it would either be David McCormack, Neil Finn, or David Bowie. These guys are most definitely in my top five favourite songwriters of all time. Such unique and brilliant ideas and styles…

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
It’s not an easy game, and you have to work bloody hard and want it even more! BUT remember why you started in the first place, enjoy the ride, and always try to have fun with it all.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?
I’ve met and worked with so many interesting people in my travels through my music so far. I’d say number one for “interesting person” would have to be Mr. Dave Graney. He is such a fascinating guy—incredible music, brilliant sense of humour, and knowledge.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?
My electric solo show is the never-ending tour and always will be. In fact, I just returned from a weekend in South Australia! BUT I do have some plans in the new year to organise my band and tour VIC, so please watch this space. I am very excited about these shows!
