A quick chat with Choosing Sides

Hey Choosing Sides! Thanks for chatting with us about your new single 'Cardboard Seats'! Can you tell us a bit about the track?

This song is about a really toxic relationship I was going through in the past... The lyrics resemble how upset and disappointed I was about the situation to the point where I wanted to literally move to another place - cos that'd be easier right? My situation caused me to notice how fake people actually were around me and how living in a city just lacks a little bit of soul.

My goal from this track was to encapsulate that feeling of yearning for something ‘real’ and the need to escape city life for something a little grittier. Intertwining both these desires to escape this relationship and to find a more genuine home, we wanted 'Cardboard seats' to also emit a sprinkle of longing and nostalgia throughout.

We hope you enjoy :)

How did the band get started?

Brothers Will and Frankie started playing with each other from the ages of 5 and 7 and jammed covers of their favourite tracks in their bedrooms (to their parents’ delight…). We just loved making noise and eventually that noise became somewhat musical! From there we just kept playing as a due until we hit high school and started playing with some of our mates. Eventually some guy with the same last name as us – Michael came along and wanted to play guitar, luckily he was the perfect fit and added a new dimension to the group.

From there (and once we turned 18) we started playing as much as we could in the city, getting involved in the music scene and meeting some incredible friends! From there we kept improving our sound and striving to cement ourselves in the local scene. In the last year or so, we have played some crazy shows which 2019 us wouldn’t have believed but we aren’t stopping there – continually wanting to improve and form even stronger connections with our fans!

What's something we might not know about you?

Frankie and I (Will) spent heaps of our childhood in the UK and France. This was really cool as it exposed us to some interesting cultures and lots of different, contrasting musical genres. I think this experience has definitely helped to mould the band’s sound and given a lot of inspiration to our song writing.

What's your 2020 looked like so far?

2020 has been CRAZY for us! There’s the obvious lockdown and social distancing thing, but in isolation we actually got so much done! We managed to write some pretty interesting stuff (or at least in our opinion) and we can’t wait to eventually share it with people soon.

This year has also provided us with some crazy gig opportunities, everything considered. We sold out our two headline shows at Adelaide’s Lion Arts Factory and Jive and more importantly managed to raise almost $4,000 for bushfire charities at the start of the year. Hopefully next year we can continue to progress and have even more fun up on stage!

What can we expect to hear and see from you next?

Cardboard Seats is the start of a new cycle for us. Choosing Sides have multiple singles ready to go, so it’s just a matter of time and… when we feel it’s the right time. Also - hopefully we can see real gigs with dancing again soon, cos we love an electric crowd and love providing a free workout alongside your tickets.
