A Quick Chat with CIRCLE

For those who don’t know, how would you describe Circle in a couple of sentences?

Circle is an experimental rock band that formed in Enmore in 2005. We’re still in Enmore and still experimenting.

Which artists do you think are your main influences?

That’s always changing and for this record we were listening to producers rather than artists. Although the work sounds nothing like anything he’s done (we think) it’s been fun listening to the words of Rick Rubin and seeing correlations between his very Zen principles and how we approached this four track project.

Your album ‘Coco & Charlie’ was just released, how do you feel having it out in the world?

Pretty glad it’s out there. All the songs were written in December 2021 (except for Sid) and we’re not sure why it took so long to have the body of work out there but here we are. They still sound fresh which is good.

Tell us about what the EP conveys, what story does it tell?

The album tracks are people’s names and those names morphed quickly into archetypes. We think that all we have is our corporeal experience but actually that surface experience is paper thin. It explores poking holes through some of those preconceived ideas.

What was the recording process like? How was it using analogue equipment like the tape machine?

We’re fairly comfortable with the analogue gear and although the next project won’t be to cassette, that ‘instant vibe’ it creates is quite addictive so we expect to revisit that again time and again.

What do you love about songwriting?

It’s as close as it gets to the source as anything we’re aware of and you can do it just about anywhere, at any time, for free! If people like your songs that’s a bonus.

What’s your favourite thing about performing live?

Sadly we’re not performing live at the moment but it was always fun. If there were fans there to hear your songs that was always enough to make it worthwhile.

What are Circle’s plans for the future

Working on producing a few things for other people at the moment and then perhaps another set of songs which are starting to take shape which may or may not see the light of day.

Which emerging Aussie acts do you think we should keep our eyes on?

Beckah Amani is one to watch for sure!
