A Quick Chat with Death by Denim

Words by Nik from Death by Denim

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE EP ‘MY HOUSE IS A CLUB’

A lot of the songs were thematically inspired by some events that occurred in summer of 2021/22. We were all locked in WA so there was a lot of mischief that we were getting up to. At the start it was all fun and games which a couple songs allude to but by the end it was all taking a hefty toll on us. The EP unintentionally plays out as a bit of this story in itself from top to bottom which we didn’t realize until we had finished recording.

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES AND HOW DO THEY AFFECT YOUR SONGWRITING?

We have a heap of ranging influences and in the writing process we like to combine different styles to create something unique in itself.  This EP was definitely inspired by The Weeknd’s latest album as well as earlier work by Gorillaz. Mix all that in with our love of fuzzy rock and roll and you get “My House is a Club”.

WHAT’S THE CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU?

Our process is always changing the further we get into our career, but more often than not it will begin with Palle coming to me with a riff or chorus and then we will write most of the lyrics or leave it as gibberish melody until lyrics pop in the head. Then we’ll come together as a band.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE SOMETHING ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Hmmm tough one. Obviously as a touring band the easy answer is something money related but that’s been said about a thousand times just this week so I’ll go a different approach. This may not just be music industry related but I think we can do a much better job of celebrating icons that have really paved the way for emerging artists. Take Tame Impala for one of many examples. They really led the charge and made it seem possible that if a bloke from Freo can gather up some friends and eventually headline Coachella, why can’t we. He’s paved the way for so many Aussie artists, not just in the psych world to have successful careers overseas and I think the music industry can do a better job in really celebrating him.

WHAT DO YOU THINK LIFE WOULD BE LIKE FOR YOU IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE MUSIC AS AN OUTLET?

There’s nothing like grabbing a guitar, heading down to the river and just playing a few tunes without any distractions. These days with the amount of social media and different outlets you can be scrolling through your phone and hours pass by. I think without music for me personally I would be a bit lost, not just as a career but also as a form of meditation and escaping the crazy reality that we live in today.

IS THERE ANYONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH?  WHY?

So many people that we would love to work with. Really digging Telenova, Teenage Dads, South Summit just to name a few. We have never done a collab with anyone before but we are always looking to keep things fresh and would love to start doing these things in the next 12/18 months for sure.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE A CAREER FOR THEMSELVES IN THE INDUSTRY?

Goodluck kid hahaha. Nah nah nah, I think it’s always hard to give advice on this topic because it is forever evolving. We started in 2017 and it is a completely different landscape to what it is now, only 6 years later. With all the trends changing and algorithms leading the charge it can be really easy to forget about the other main important thing. The music. Even with the tik tok trends and seemingly only needing 20 seconds of a song to do well in order to have “success”, there is a way where you can combine all of those things with actual integrity as a musician/songwriter to have longevity in the game.

WHO’S THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU’VE WORKED WITH/MET?

Going to have to say our favorite photographer in the biz, Daniel Hildebrand. Dan is one of those guys that you can’t help but feel up and about when he enters a room. The most fun we’ve had on tour I think was when dan was with us shooting. He’s quite a chaotic character and so are we so there was never a dull moment whether it was a gig night, a night off roaming the town, or long van rides. Love ya Dan

ANY UPCOMING SHOWS?

We are heading on an aus tour in May which will be amazing to get back, it’ll be in support of the new EP so that’s super exciting! We’ve also got a couple gigs in WA before that supporting Bag Raiders on March 31st and The Cat Empire on the 22nd of April which we are real keen for. Busy couple months ahead
