A Quick Chat with Dixie
Congrats on the release of your new single ‘Crackin’ Like Dat’ with Snoop Dogg! How’d it come about?
Thanks! It just kind of happened out of nowhere, I put the feelers out to see what sort of big name collab I could get, and we ended up with Snoop!
And how awesome was it having Snoop involved, how’d that happen?
Incredibly awesome, and my Mum couldn't believe it! Even now people are like "Wait, what? SNOOP?!"
But how it actually came about isn't really a very interesting story - my people spoke to his people's people's people and got it done.
As a DJ/Producer in the Dance Music scene for many years, how have things changed over this time for you?
Things have changed massively over the years, not just in music tastes and styles, but the way in which we consume music - I'm not going to comment on if these changes are a positive or a negative – but all we can do as producers is roll with the changes or risk getting left behind.
That also applies to the way we have to market ourselves now via the overwhelming amount of social media platforms, also our revenue has completely been upended due to the shift to streaming versus physical sales, it's an entirely new landscape.
What are some of the highlights or best memories of shows or Artists you’ve worked with over the years?
Spending five years as the international tour DJ for Bombs Away, travelling to places I'd never heard of and playing shows with my mates was definitely a big highlight, especially playing at Spring Break in Florida. Another one was being the support act for one of Steve Aoki's Australian tours and being able to watch him do his crazy stage antics from the stage.
A memory I'll never forget though is when I accidentally got absinthe in my eye during a show, then grabbed what I thought was water to wash it out, but it turned out to be vodka. I then grabbed another pitcher of clear liquid thinking THAT was water... Nope! Vodka again! Fun times.
Do you have any new music coming up or an album you’d like to let us know about?
Yep! I've got a song called 'Getting Down', which is a collab with Messy Jessie, that's coming out on 2Dutch Records on March 21. Another one called ‘Back & Forth’ which is coming out after that (I don't know the exact date yet), and beyond that I've got another three tracks ready to go, just sorting out the release details at the moment!
Where can people catch you playing around Melbourne / Australia / internationally?
Next up you can catch me at Mieplace Nightclub in Gladstone, Queensland for ANZAC Day weekend!
But I have a feeling I'll be adding a few more shows between now and then...
