A Quick Chat with Dolce Blue

What was the inspiration behind your latest track ‘Talking With The Sun’?

Lyrically, ‘Talking With The Sun’ is inspired by how much I genuinely love my friends, and how sentimental I get about the late nights we spend together talking until the sun rises. I wanted to capture that pure bliss, but also juxtapose it with that glooming feeling that not everything is forever, and you can’t be in that happy moment forever. Musically I was inspired by Lana Del Rey’s West Coast, and I wanted to challenge myself and the band to play a song that changes time signature and tempo. It makes it an interesting, and really fun experience to play live.

What was the creative process like in the studio for the new album?

All the songs were written before we went into the studio, and I (Veronica) had recorded “scratch tracks”, which are essentially just rough recording of my guitar and vocals to a click track at home, and sent them to the band to practice along to, and to Michael in the studio to use as a guide for the band. We’re all pretty busy people between our studies and work, so we booked studio sessions when a member was available and would try to get a couple of takes for each track done in a session i.e Brody would go in to record drums for three tracks at a time in a session, the next session Lachy would go in and record guitar for those same three songs. I tried to be at all the sessions for some continuity, but we all really trusted one another and Michael that we were going to create something great, and that we could all be proud of. For a few sessions we had the luxury of all attending, which was fantastic and a lot of ideas and creativity came from bouncing things off each other - like adding synth, shaker, and magical additional sounds, or extra backing vocals that would otherwise not be in the song.

How did Dolce Blue form?

Brody, Daniel, and Lachy have known each other for a very long time, since primary school in fact, and had played music together for most of high school. I joined their school for year 11 & 12, and had a music class with Brody and Lachy where our music teacher put us in a band together to play some original songs I had written. We played community events, school assemblies and lunchtime concerts, and had a lot of fun with it all. Because we really enjoyed it, we wanted to keep jamming after school had ended, and I kept writing new songs for us. Around that time Lachy decided he wanted to switch to guitar from bass, and Brody suggested that he bring Daniel into the mix. With a new lineup, and heaps of new material we decided to enter a battle of the bands under the name Dolce Blue, and thus the band was formed!

What have been your favourite album releases from this year so far?

There has been so much good music this year so far, however the albums I have had on repeat are Kali Uchi - ‘Red Moon In Venus’, Lana Del Rey - ‘Did You Know That There’s An Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard’, Raye - ‘My 21st Century Blues’ and Melanie Martinez - ‘Portals (Deluxe)’.

If you could share the stage with any musician (alive or dead) who would it be?

Without question, Lana Del Rey.

What was the first concert you ever went to?

I have a vague memory of seeing the Wiggles as a child, but the first fully formed memory of a concert I have was Tonight Alive’s The Other Side tour in 2013 at the Astor Theatre in Mt Lawley (WA).

What’s in store for the rest of the year?

We’re about to set off on tour for essentially all of July! And then we’re back in the studio working on the deluxe edition of Sweet Melancholy, and another little project to celebrate the 5th anniversary of one of most popular songs.
