A Quick Chat With Druid

Australian metalcore outfit Druid have unleashed their latest single, 'HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE)'. This powerful track delves into mental health struggles and serves as a personal reflection by co-lead vocalist Jordan Williams. Druid has made waves in the Australian heavy scene, sharing stages with esteemed acts like Void Of Vision and Alpha Wolf. 'HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE)' captures the band's unflinching style, delivering intense vocals, searing riffs, and cathartic energy. We caught up with Jordan to find out more:

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

HANG IN THERE (IT GETS WORSE) is an unfiltered exploration of some of the inner struggles faced when dealing with depression and other mental health issues. When I was writing this song it was important for me to be authentic and express how I was feeling without sugar coating it. I want people to be able to relate and use this song as an outlet for their emotions/feelings.

Who are some of your influences and why?

The influences for the band vary as we’ve all come from slightly different backgrounds.

However, my personal influences are Noah Sebastian from Bad Omens and Oliver Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon.

I feel like both of these artists are able to distinguish themselves from their peers by not allowing themselves to be put into a box and both are continuously evolving.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

From a lyrical standpoint the process has been different each time but generally Chris and I will decide who is going to take point guard on writing the lyrics and then reconvene to add our own flare to each of the songs.

This song in particular the majority of the lyrics had already been written, it was more about placement and dictation once we entered the studio.

What do you think makes a great song?

I think a great song has many elements and it generally depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

I think a solid hook/chorus is important but the song overall has to be memorable.

A great song doesn’t have an expiry date.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Landon Tewers from The Plot in You.

He’s another one of those artists that isn’t afraid to push the envelope and draws from many different genres and influences.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I write poetry as well and find it can be equally cathartic.

Sometimes more so as there aren't any real restrictions - I view it as creative journaling.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Headwreck and NTH RD. Both are very exciting local bands creating genuinely good music.

Winter or summer and why?

Spring - bitta dis bitta dat

What else do you have planned for 2023?

We’re planning on releasing another 3 singles and playing heaps more shows with hopefully a few interstate shows on the horizon!
