A quick chat with Eliott
Congratulations on your new single ‘Home’, could you tell us where your head was at when you wrote the song?
Thank you! I was travelling a lot at the time, I’d just come off two massive support tours which i was doing solo, so I was feeling super homesick, in a different hotel alone most nights. I knew i’d always wanted to write a song which was an ode to my family - and this seemed like the perfect time - because i was feeling a lot of emotions during that time.
You’ve travelled around the world to work on to record music and to also support some amazing artists, how do you deal with not getting home sick when on tour?
For me i think getting up on stage each night really cancelled out any homesickness i felt - it was a massive rush performing and it made every part of the loneliness/homesickness worth it.
When growing up? Was there a tonne of different music being played around your family home? Can you remember some of the records that were getting played?
There was always music around the house growing up. One record i remember distinctly is “the sound of white- missy higgins” me and mum would blast this in the car together whenever we got the chance.. This record is how i learn to harmonise. Other bands were like coldplay, powderfingr, oasis, eva cassidy.
What was it like growing up in a regional town and finding your sound?
You have a very special voice and haven’t really seen something this powerful in the Australian industry?
Were there any influences from your parents or your family members?
I guess as i grew up and experienced new things i slowly began to find my sound - from a young age i was listening to mum and dads music and always had a love for singer songwriters. No one in my family did music professionally but my mum sang, and there was always music around me.
The song has relevance now for different reasons, if you were to write it again now would you make any changes knowing what you know.
Not at all, it means more now to me as i couldn’t see my family for a while being locked down in Melbourne.. So crazily enough the song has come out at a time where alot of people are dying to get home. This year has been a tough one of everybody around the world.. I just hope everyone can go and hug their loved ones!
Finally, many people overlook artwork of singles, could you tell us something about the artwork for Home? Who took the photo, where was it taken? Is that your handwriting?
This was a still from the video clip, shot by Ed Triglone on an old film camera. I think it perfectly captures just how i feel when i’m at home, calm and at ease from the craziness the city brings. It was taken in my hometown Cobram, my dad actually took us to the location! Haha.
