A Quick Chat With Full Flower Moon Band

Congratulations on releasing your latest album. Where did the name ‘Megaflower’ come from?

Firstly, it sounds good. But it also gives a sense of expansiveness - big, unknown, and important. That was the kind of album we felt we had to make.

What was the writing process like?

Well, after coming up with the album title (that came first), there was an immediate question - how to make something worthy of the title Megaflower. I ended up leaning into the challenge and the Megaflower writing process was as adventurous and daring as the title.

Personally, what is your favourite track on ‘Megaflower’, and why?

For me (Babyshakes) it’s Enemy. The rest of the band all have different choices. Enemy was the most *struck by lightening* song I wrote and it came to me after a lot of the other songs were already written. In that spirit, it felt the most exciting to put on the record.

If you could share ‘Megaflower’ with anyone (alive or not) to listen to in its entirety, who would it be?

I’d really like David Bowie to listen. It’s wild to think that he can’t because Bowie still feels alive to me. I’d like him to listen and give me advice for the next album. He’d probably recommended we go way further out of bounds.

It’s the first album to feature your full live band in the studio. How did this influence the recording process?

Actually our last record ‘Diesel Forever’ was made together live in the studio - just with a different bassist. I do, however, describe Megaflower as a ‘studio album’ because it is much more produced - multi-tracked across a few different places (mainly Swanpond Studios),  and we didn’t worry about if we could play it live - priority was the final recording.

The album’s cover is intriguing, featuring you and a reflective rectangle in the desert. Can you tell us about the inspiration and process behind capturing it?

We could have made the aesthetic more *hard edged* and go down that *rock is cooler than cool* thing, but I wanted something a bit softer, surreal, and unexplainable. The final look we arrived at comes from Joel and Reece, our mates known as YeahRad. They navigated all of the things I wanted to avoid, and presented this monolith + masks in the desert idea. My father who works in stainless steel made us the real life monolith and it took 2 muscle men to get it up the hill (shout out Tyson & Jasper from Tiny Minds Agency.)

You recently spent some time touring in the UK, what were your top 3 highlights?

1.  I had been in New York for a month before the tour started - so being reunited with the band was really nice. 2. Our London show was the loudest crowd we’ve ever had, and for our first ever show overseas - so we were overjoyed at the turn out. 3. We almost hung out with Eric Andre and Doug Pound in Manchester - but partied with Coffin instead, that was a good night.

And finally, you’re about to embark on an Australian tour to celebrate ‘Megaflower’. What can fans expect from the live shows?

This new album lends itself to a more expansive show, so we’re pulling out all the tricks - adding new instruments and guest players in as many cities as we can. It’s Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue in my mind. We’ve made a ‘studio record’, and now the live show can be its own thing. There’s a craft to making a show that honors the recordings, but has room for whatever energy is in the room that night. I’m keen to do that.
