A Quick Chat with Gavin Mac

Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Sideswiped’?

Absolutely! 'Sideswiped' was one of the first songs I ever wrote as a kid. It captures the feeling of one of those days where everything goes sideways. During the pandemic, I had a lot of time to revisit old material, so I dusted it off and reworked it to really bring out the story. It’s about the proverbial day from hell, where nothing goes right, but there’s still a sense of resilience in it.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I’ve been influenced by a wide range of artists, from Chuck Berry and The Eagles to Eric Clapton and Chris Stapleton. The common thread is definitely guitar-driven, singer-songwriter music. These influences shape my songwriting by encouraging me to focus on strong melodies, compelling stories, and authentic emotions. They remind me to keep my music grounded and genuine.

What’s the creative process like for you?

My creative process is pretty fluid. Sometimes a melody or guitar riff will spark a song, other times it’s a lyric or story idea. I usually write quickly once I get started, drawing on my emotions and experiences. It’s all about capturing a moment or feeling and translating that into music.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry, what would it be?

I’d love to see more support for emerging artists. There’s so much talent out there, but it can be tough to break through without the right resources and opportunities. More platforms for new artists to showcase their music would be fantastic.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

Life without music? That’s hard to imagine. Music has always been my way of expressing myself and dealing with life’s ups and downs. Without it, I think I’d struggle to find a similar outlet. Music brings me a sense of purpose and connection that I’d be lost without!!!

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?

If I could collaborate with anyone, it would probably be Paul McCartney. He’s a genius when it comes to songwriting and melodies. Lenny Kravitz would also be amazing because he’s so cool and versatile. And Chris Stapleton, for his incredible lyrics and melodies.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Never. Give. Up. The music industry can be tough, but if you’re passionate about your craft, keep pushing forward no matter what obstacles come your way. Stay true to yourself and your music, and don’t get discouraged by setbacks.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

I’ve had the privilege of working with some incredible artists, but one of the most interesting has to be Dave Grohl. He’s an awesome guy, and an icon. I met him when he was only starting Foo Fighters, he was still recovering from the loss of Kurt Cobain, and touring in Singapore with Sonic Youth. He invited me to sit down, have a few beers and share his food.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

Yes, definitely! I’m playing at the Robin Hood in Sydney on June 22 and the Post Office Hotel in Tamworth on July 20. We’re also putting together more touring plans for later this year, so keep an eye out for announcements. I’m really looking forward to bringing my music to life for audiences across Australia
