A Quick Chat with Hattie Oates

What inspired the creation of the song?

This song is a melting pot of thoughts and feelings. Mainly about a few relationships at the time where I felt like I was giving more than I was getting back. Mix that all together and I got “Buy Me A Dream”!

Explain the process of writing it:

Ben and I wrote this song in Sydney last year, and I had nearly fleshed out a completely different song before Ben hmmed a melody, and the session spiraled in a new direction. The whole concept after that came hard and fast, clearly I was feeling a certain way! The song was done in less than an hour, but we refined the final mix for the next few months, to get it right where I wanted it. An anthem that allows you to speak to your depleted and exhausted self, but then takes you on a journey that leaves you inspired and re-motivated by the end.

What can you tell us about what you've got coming up this year?

Honestly, I can’t believe we are nearly half way through this year! But nevertheless, the second half of this year I am about to embark on is so exciting. I’m heading over to the UK for 3 months to write, collaborate and meet whoever I cross paths with! This will be the biggest and most formative experience of my career so far and I’m so excited to take everyone on my journey… stay tuned! I’ll be soaking up all the content I can get for the songwriting, hopefully it gets juicy ;)

I’m also planning to release another single while I’m over there which will be my 3rd for the year, and I can't WAIT for you to hear that one.

What do you want listeners to take away from the single?

I want them to feel everything when listening to the song and then enjoy a dramatic relief after. Like they just got all of that sh** off their chest, and now they are ready to take on the world again. Kind of like a good therapy session!

What's your favourite part of the song?

Without a DOUBT, it would have to be the post chorus/bridge that ends the song. The whole song just brews up to this point, and the big belting notes are a bit fun to sing too! Singing this song live for the first time was everything I wanted it to be. I could feel the energy from the crowd and when they got a hold of the lyrics “Buy Me A Dream” at the end, it was like an extra injection of adrenaline.
