A Quick Chat With Have A Good Day

Bursting out in full feel-good glory is Perth’s Have A Good Day - a project that will undoubtedly bring you all the energy you need to have a good day. The indie pop duo are made up of Perth mainstays, James MacCallum and Luke Minness, who between the two of them in other projects, have shared the stage supporting artists including Siobhan Cotchin, Dulcie, The Presets, Wafia, San Cisco, ALPINE and more. They’ve just dropped their playful debut single and music video, so we caught up with them to find out more about the project, the track and some other things they get up to.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

This track is all about the importance of connection. Connection to loved ones, nature and even our own body can help to bring this wild world into perspective.

Who are some of your influences and why?

We are big fans of anthemic festival music with current artists like The 1975 or BAYNK. When we were kids summer festival bands like Empire Of The Sun and MGMT were huge so there is definitely a nostalgic nod to that in all of our songs as well.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

We both work very quickly often writing the main bones of a song in one studio session. Melodies and addictive production come quickly, it’s the details that take time.

What do you think makes a great song?

Emotional vulnerability meeting with unabashed confidence. A happy dose of delusion is required to make any exciting art in our opinion.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Mallrat. She has never released a bad song, she's a genius. She’s also top of mind after her incredible set at Laneway!

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

What’s a hobby? Music, music, music baby!

Who are some local bands we should check out?
At the moment we are loving Alter Boy, Mali Jose, Drea, Adrian Dzvuke and Joan and the Giants. But there are too many to choose, we love Perth music!

Winter or summer and why?

Summer!! Nothing like the joy of a  summer festival!

What else do you have planned for 2023?

We have a lot more music to put out this year and are rehearsing a pretty high-energy live set. We would love to just continue what we are already doing, it’s too fun!
