A QUICK CHAT WITH HETTICEE

Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘All The Same’?
This song is a sassy disco-pop bop that was inspired by my boredom with all the fast trends and herd mentality that I see a lot of today. It's also definitely coming from my frustration with repetition and monotony in my own life and I think it was an opportunity for me to vent a little - I’m done with routine clichés and hearing the same stories over and over again. I want something new and unique and I want to say all this whilst being accompanied by glistening disco strings and a funky bass line.

Can you tell us about your musical background and how you got started as a singer?
Yeah - music has been a part of my life since I was little. I grew up playing a lot of instruments and then went on to study music at university. While at uni though I began to experience performance anxiety for the first time in my life, and I dealt with that by stepping away from music for a little while. It came to a point though where I felt a tangible void without music, and so I started to get back into singing and writing, and then decided that I might as well start to release music rather than let it sit on a hard drive forever. The rest is history.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
I listen to a lot of different genres so I take inspo from a lot of artists, whether that's their lyricism, their melodies or harmonies or the way they approach songwriting in general. This song was a bit of an experiment for me in that regard, as I usually approach songwriting from a more serious or introspective point of view, but this song is meant to be a bit stupid and make fun of itself, its meant to be taken with a grain of salt and its pure function is to just be a bop to dance and vent to. Definitely channelled Remi Wolf / Jessie Ware.

What’s the creative process like for you?
It’s different every time to be honest. This time round, Matt Sampson (Producer) brought the beat to me first so we started with the bass line and the overal feel for the song. From there I found the chorus melody pretty quickly. I usually know if its a good song when I can see a music video for it in my head - and for this one I envisioned a slow-motion 80s roller rink filled with Xanadu goddesses owning the space and knocking people out of their way ahah - so I ran with that and bit by bit the subject of the song and the lyrics fell into place.

The single features production from Matt Sampson. How did this collaboration come about, and how did his contributions enhance the song?
I mean the producer IS the song! Matt and I work on the production together so I’m constantly contributing and assessing and offerin gmy opinions but Matt runs the ship. He is constantly adding and altering so many tiny details that I would never consider that fills in all the voids and missing pieces. He takes a little idea and turns it into a whole audible world, it's pretty cool to watch and be a part of. My favourite are the disco strings though - they are so glittery and silly and I love them.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?
I work in film and TV so I spend a lot of my time watching shows or going to the movies and I try to see as much live music as I can too.

What are your future plans as a musician? Are there any upcoming projects or themes you're excited to explore in your music?
I’ve got a couple more releases over the next few months, hopefully leading up to an album release in April 2024.
