A Quick Chat with Isabel Wood

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR  YOUR SINGLE ‘’PULLING TEETH?’

I’ve always wanted to write a song that people can send as a breakup to their S.O. and this is finally it ahah. If you can’t tell, I was in a super savage mood when I wrote this and that just kind of snowballed. It’s about letting a toxic relationship go on for too long until finally everything reaches breaking point and you explode with all of the thoughts that you probably should’ve kept to yourself.

WHAT'S YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE WHEN MAKING MUSIC, FROM WRITING TO RECORDING?

I’d say about 99% of my songs start with just me in my bedroom on guitar or piano. Once I have something that resembles a song, I’ll make a rough demo and write down a bunch of production ideas then take it to a producer and let them sprinkle their magic all over it. And by magic I mean insane talent.

WHAT ARE SOME MUSICAL INFLUENCES YOU CAN LIKEN YOUR SOUND TO?

I’m definitely influenced by a whole bunch of sounds and genres but the main ones are definitely pop and pop punk. In my opinion you just can’t beat a catchy pop punk song with some slick pop production. I’ve been listening to a lot of albums at the moment like Gracie Abrams, Sabrina Carpenter and Bazzi which for sure inspire the music I make.

IS THERE ANYONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH?  WHY?

This is totally unrealistic but my life would be complete if I got to collab with All Time Low. Little sixteen year old Izzy would die.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GREAT SONG?

Everyone probably has a different answer to this but for me it’s all about melody. If a song has a unique or catchy melody then I will absolutely listen to it until my brain begs me to stop.

WHO ARE SOME LOCAL ACTS WE SHOULD CHECK OUT?

I’ve seen some incredible live shows in Meanjin/Brisbane recently and if you haven’t already, definitely get yourself to a Hallie or Selfish Sons show.

WITH THE YEAR CLOSING OUT, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR NEXT CHAPTER?

Ahh so much. I’m working towards an EP next year which will include my new single ‘pulling teeth’ and some other tracks I’ve released this year. I also have a bunch of demos I’ve written so my next step is deciding which new songs will make the cut and then it’s time to get back in the studio (which is my favourite part of the music making process)!
