A Quick Chat with Jack Anthony

Congratulations on the single ‘Call My Name’! What are the plans to celebrate its release?

I’ve decided that I’m going to throw a big party to celebrate by having a headline show at The Lady Hampshire in Camperdown on Friday the 6th of October! It’ll be great to perform the new single live, as well as bunch of other originals. Some of which I have either already gigged live or released, as well as some brand new songs and a few covers thrown in there.

For someone that hasn’t heard your music before – how would you describe it?

I’ve always struggled with this question but here are a few key words that come to mind.

Bittersweet, energetic and upbeat.

With my latest single ‘Call my name’, I really wanted to embrace the bittersweet feeling and try my best to make something anthemic. I really hope I was able to do that. To me, it doesn’t matter if you scream and cry while listening to it or dance and have fun, I just want the listener to feel something.

My music in the past has been compared to bands and artists like Catfish and the Bottlemen, Kings of Leon, Sam Fender and Hockey Dad. I love all those artists and bands, but I also take inspiration from musicians from a wide variety of genres like Jeff Buckley, Gang of Youths, Fontaines DC and Foo Fighters.

The music video is incredibly lively and has a great energy throughout. How was the process of recording it?

So much fun! I was lucky enough to be able to shoot it with a bunch of my mates as well as my good friends Danielo and Sarah from Luxxe Media who directed and edited the music video.

A few days before we shot the music video, Danielo, Sarah, a bunch of my friends and I were on a weekend away in Adelaide to visit a mate who lives down there. We sat down and listened to the song and came up with some ideas for different sections of the song. In my head, I knew I wanted PLENTY of dancing (of whatever variety, dad dancing preferred haha) which is in somewhat contrast with the vibe of the song? But now I can’t hear the song without the visuals of the music video!

I then recruited some friends who were keen and filmed at a couple of different locations near the city. One being Carriageworks in Eveleigh and Shepard St Carpark in Darlington. Both locations ended up providing a perfect backdrop and aesthetic of what we wanted. We then were just having fun filming and dancing and was just so stoked with the end product! Big thanks to everyone who helped out, especially Sarah and Danielo from Luxxe Media.

What are some of your most notable live shows to date?

The best show I have ever played was definitely my artist launch show which was earlier this year at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville. For the first time in my life, I had my own lyrics sung back to me which was insane and just the vibe inside that venue was so sick and surreal! I was expecting a decent crowd, but we ended up getting close to capacity which I did not think could happen. I was so taken back by it, that when I walked on to stage and heard the noise and saw the crowd, I got emotional. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. This is a feeling I know I want to experience again and will be chasing for the rest of my life.

Is there anywhere fans can hear the release live?

To celebrate the release of the single, I’ll be throwing a party at The Lady Hampshire on Friday the 6th of October! Super keen to get the band back together and show everyone what we have been up to. So if you’re local and free, where else would you rather be on the 6th of October?!

Also have some other shows lined up which haven’t been announced yet which I’m also super keen for. Keep an eye out on my socials to keep up to date! :)
