A QUICK CHAT WITH JOEL TURNER

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘’Mullet’?

Macca the rappa came up with the original concept and showed me the track and then I came up with the beat and added some beatbox and guitar. Mullet is a comedy song and an anthem for the mullet hairstyle. We wrote the song because people stereotype mullets as a bogan thing so the film clip was a piss take at the stereotypes of how people see mullets and giving it back to those who judge a book by its cover.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

I’ve been playing guitar since I was a child and grew up appreciating different styles of music from your 70’s rock guitar hero’s to 90’s Hiphop. I got into street cyphers in my early teens as a beatboxer. I would do the job of a DJ in that moment and beatbox while people rapped over it so my younger years had helped shaped my guitar beatbox sound.

What’s the creative process like for you?

It can be different for every track. I usually start with guitar then add beats and bass but sometimes I come up with the beatbox first. It all depends on the vibe I’m feeling at that time.

If you could change something about the Australian/New Zealand music industry what would it be? It would be awesome to see the Australian Music Industry giving more radio time to Aussie music and Support local artists more like we used to.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

I couldn’t imagine not having music since I’ve been making music from a young age but I’ve always been into creative things so I probably would’ve been into cartooning or cooking

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

I think doing a guitar beatbox style track with Tommy Emmanuel would be dope! Because it’s Tommy Emmanuel!

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

To keep studying your craft and Don’t give up. Believe in what you do and then others will believe too

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

I beatboxed on stage with Chuck D and Flava Flav. They were awesome to perform with. Also Maseo from De La Soul is a real inspirational dude. I’ve always had great chats with him about music and he gives no B.S real advice

Favourite hangover cure?

Berocca! Always Berocca!
