A Quick Chat with Kaiit

Papua New Guinea born, now Naarm/Melbourne based, Kaiit (pronounced Ky-yeet), burst onto the scene in 2017 with her debut single “Natural Woman”. Creating waves online and commanding the attention of soul and hip hop tastemakers, the subsequent release of debut EP Live From Her Room fuelled sold out shows and hit single Miss Shiney led to an award for Best Soul/R&B Release at the 2019 ARIA Awards.

After a brief hiatus, the enigmatic Kaiit is back in a creative groove with new music on the horizon and a big upcoming gig at PASIFIX for Live At The Bowl.

How are things? What’s been happening?

It’s been so nice performing again, dancing around and seeing everyone’s beautiful faces at these shows. Just doing all the things I need to be doing to get these next releases ready and taking life day-by-day.

What music have you been bumping lately?

I’m always bumping my favs…over and over again. But lately some new discoveries I’ve been playing is “Running back and forth” by Edwin Starr. I just love hearing a song then realising that another one of my fav songs had taken inspiration from it. Another new fav is “Iceys on deck” by NO PANTY” and lastly “I see a different you” by Koop. All bopssss.

What are your biggest influences / icons as an artist?

Right now, movies that I grew up on. 1920’s music. Amy (Winehouse) of course and the people around me who peruse their creativity.

If you had to explain your creative process in one word. What would it be?

Thoughtful 💚

What sort of energy do you want to explore in your next release?

I want to express my dream world, my inner fantasies that I really want to bring to life as close to possible as what they look like in my head.

Favourite things about your homeland Papua New Guinea?

My favourite things in PNG are being with family, learning our ancestors ways, speaking Tok Pisin freely - being greeted by everyone, people don’t often say hello to each other here but in PNG, whether you know each other or not, they’re saying good morning, good night or good afternoon… I miss having the freshest fruit in the world and buai.

What are you looking forward to?

Looking forward to singing these unreleased songs live at shows leading up to release!
