A Quick Chat with Kat Greta

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Let It Go’

Yeah! It’s a funny thing, I always write the music first, and then write lyrics that go along with the flow of the music. They just blurt out of my mouth without any conscious thought. When I look back at my lyrics, they are miraculously very meaningful to me. You know when you’re in a job or a relationship that just isn’t working, and you’re feeling bogged down… but it’s comfy, so you just keep plugging along. This song is about finding the courage to get uncomfortable and make a change. For me, I always had a gut feeling that I wanted to write and perform again. My parents are experiencing a rapid decline in health and it’s because of this that I’m feeling a sense of urgency to live my dreams.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?

Gosh, I have so many influences. I am obsessed with older music, and am always drawn to a song’s melody. Carole King, Brian Wilson, Billy Joel are absolute geniuses. Then there’s the master drummer, John Bonham - he has got a killer groove like no other! I always appreciate a good rhythm in a song, so always think about #1 Melody #2 Rhythm

What’s the creative process like for you?

I’m a super sensitive person. Sometimes I just feel a certain way, so I go to the piano and play some chords and a melody. I’ve been trained as a classical pianist, so my songs have a strong keys element in them. Once I’ve got the melody sorted, I take a break. I might come back to the song a few hours later and make some changes. Sometimes the song comes quickly, and other times it’s a struggle. I usually pursue the songs that come easily, because then the song is like an uninterrupted journey.

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?

More chicks on stage! And rock music - I can just feel it in my bones that it’s making a come-back. There’s nothing better than going to a rock concert and seeing people just shredding their instruments!

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?

I just couldn’t imagine… I would probably be riddled with anxiety. There’s so much going on in the world at the moment, and in my own personal life. I need music to stay sane.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?  Why?

Yeah, Kate Bush. I’ve always been a fan - I am obsessed with her song “Wuthering Heights”. I’ve got this song up my sleeve which she would be perfect for. Actually, my producer Lindsay also had a dream that she sang it at the Grammys haha! He ended up mixing it with his dream in mind.

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?

Just go for it! Learn an instrument, play your heart out… write, perform. Read everything you can about the industry, and make connections with people who you trust. And above all, listen.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?

My producer, Lindsay. He is an industry veteran, and has taught me so much! The first time I met him, he sat me down and talked to me about the music industry for 6 hours straight! I left his studio at something like 2am, realizing that I was crazy, but I had a much better sense of what I was going into.

Favourite hangover cure?

Ohhhh….. Probably dirty Maccas! Soooo bad, but the greasier the better ;)

Any plans for a tour on the cards?

Yeah I’m currently looking into doing a Victorian tour later in the year.
