A QUICK CHAT WITH KATHLEEN HALLORAN

Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration for your single ‘Free With Me’?
I was listening to a lot of Joan As Policewoman, Madison Cunningham and The Beatles, and was almost trying to write a song to myself, to encourage myself to break through the boxes, boundaries and limitations we face each and every day. I wanted to tap into the power and beauty of inner and outer freedom. I had never written a song before, and being a pretty shy person, I had a few hidden anxieties about stepping out into the world with my own music with what I had to say. I hoped it might be something that others like me could relate to and grab onto.

What are your influences and how do they affect your songwriting?
I would say my influences are pretty vast. Every day on the planet is a chance and opportunity for songwriting inspiration. I am very inspired by my friends, family and artists like Madison Cunningham, St Vincent and Martha Wainwright.

What’s the creative process like for you?
I don’t have a set process and when I have tried to enforce one I find myself feeling blocked and restricted. The songs that I am most connected to and proud of have all been ones that have come out very fast, when I should’ve been doing other things!!!

If you could change something about the Australian music industry what would it be?
I don’t have any solutions, however, I’d like to make it more sustainable and easier for artists to be heard, seen and actually make a living out of their art. So many local artists are doing it so tough and are at a real breaking point. I’m one of the lucky ones who’s been able to hold down over 100 gigs this year with multiple artists and I am still feeling the pinch of the immense pressure that  it takes to get something off the ground.

What do you think life would be like for you if you didn’t have music as an outlet?
I was joking with a colleague the other day about how completely unemployable we would be if we didn’t play an instrument!! I can’t imagine my life without music, but I guess I will say I do have this secret dream of moving to the country and opening up a small bakery - so maybe I’d be doing that!!

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with? Why?
Madison Cunningham. She’s such an inspiration to me and I think she is an unbelievably true artist and storyteller. I connect so deeply with her music, guitar playing, stories and artistic choices and I have a feeling we’d be great friends!

What’s your advice to young people who want to make a career for themselves in the industry?
My advice would be to say yes and take those opportunities, because one of those random gigs in the country could be the very thing that changes your world forever. Keep an open mind, stay grateful but grounded always, and look for the beauty in people and places.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve worked with/met?
I’d have to say my boss and best friend, Kate Ceberano .She truly blows (and has expanded) my mind in pretty inexplicable ways. I met Kate when I was 21 years old, I was in a house band led by violinist Xani Kolac and Kate was a feature artist. We were fast friends and have been working together ever since. I think what makes her so interesting is how interested she is in the creative world around her. She has a profound ability to find people and create life-changing, magic moments. She’s obviously a world class performing artist, but also an incredible painter, writer, dancer, quilt maker… I could go on.

Any plans for a tour on the cards?
Yes! I have already begun planning a tour for 2025 to accompany the completed album. I can’t wait to get out to as many places/towns as possible next year and meet lots of new faces and music lovers!
