A Quick Chat with Kit Genesis

How does this single differ from your first release as Kit Genesis and in comparison to the rest of the EP?

This track is less heartfelt ballad compared to ‘Pride’ and more guitar driven mellow indie rock, revealing another side to the Kit Genesis sound.

I love playing this song live, it gives space for my guitarist Harry Armstrong to really shred a solo and show his guitar chops!

What is the message or inspiration behind this track?

I wrote this song at a time when I started dating someone, during the inbetween phase of not knowing where the relationship was leading. It’s about the whirlwind feelings of knowing that I like this person, but unaware if these feelings are reciprocated. The doubts and uncertainties of putting my heart on the line, but despite these fears, coming to terms with the idea that how can you know if it’s worth it if you don’t try.

To me this song draws from a lot of 2000’s indie rock sonically that I grew up listening to. I hear nostalgic bands like Snow Patrol, which brings back childhood memories of listening to CD’s in the car on road trips to the coast.

You’ve created a visualiser for this song, can you tell us a bit about it? Who did you work with and what was the concept?

I think leaning into this 2000’s nostalgia, I thought it would be fun to shoot this visualiser on an old Panasonic camcorder. I shot it with my friend Phoebe Veldhuizen and partner Ebi Coniglio outside a church in North Melbourne. It was a pretty simple concept, I just wanted it to be visually interesting while retaining an early 2000’s vintage appeal of home videos and the era of Coldplay, Keane, The Fray and more.

What has it been like to perform now as Kit and how do your live shows differ from your Tess Hannah era?

I feel like there’s been a lot of growth for me personally and musically and to me it feels great to be more vulnerable and honest within myself and through my music. Allowing myself a bit of breathing room before launching ‘Kit Genesis’ gave me space to really find my current sound. I’d say the Kit Genesis shows lean a little more into a mellow/moody indie sound, but still has moments of rocky fun. I always want the project to continue to evolve, but I feel really proud of my current live shows. I’ve been playing with my band members for a long time now, I met Charlie and Ross back at Uni and Harry was my housemate, an avid bedroom guitarist, so naturally we started playing together too! It’s been really lovely going on this journey with them and developing a sound together.

What have been some exciting things since the first release?

I’ve played two headline shows which were really special! I had a fun interview on PBS radio and ‘Pride’ was listed as PBS’ Top 10 tracks of the week on PBS, alongside Adrianne Lenker who I adore! ‘Pride’ was added to the ARIA Mixtape Music Victoria’s Top Picks, alongside G Flip and Julia Jacklin which was super cool! I’m also just really excited for this year. It feels so good to finally release music that I’ve been working on for a long time, play more regular gigs and collaborate with incredible artists on cool music video concepts and photoshoots!

What are the plans around the EP release?

I’m currently in the works planning a fun event! This year is also an exciting time in my personal life as I am booked in to get top surgery mid year! I thought it would be a fun idea to put on an event before my surgery as a big celebration of queerness, so more to come here, but I’m hoping for a fun gay party with bands, DJ’s and drag! I’ve also got a very exciting music video in the works for my next release. I'm gonna keep this under the wraps for the moment but know that I’m dying to share the final result!
