A Quick Chat with Lachlan Denton

CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR ALBUM ‘FURNISHINGS’

I think, like most of my records, it’s a snapshot of my life, and a picture of who I am, and have been over the last couple of years. I’ve always said my records are like time capsules. I’m inspired by a lot of things and goings on.

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES AND HOW DO THEY AFFECT YOUR SONGWRITING?

My influences are the people around me and my day to day life for the most part. I have some musical infuelnces, but I don’t think they have changed a whole lot over the last 10 years, and don’t tend to affect my music to the same extent as they once did. I’ve been listening to more intruimental music of late, but I’m still singing for now.

WHAT’S THE CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU?

Usually I just decide I want to make something with someone, or it’s about time to record a new record with a band, and I go about writing songs or collecting up whatever voice memos and fragments of ideas I have floating around. The songs on this record were pretty well written on my own first, and then taken to friends for some help, but more and more lately I like to take small ideas and flesh them out over recording. I’m not tied to one specific way of creating.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE SOMETHING ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I’m pretty indifferent. I’m not sure where it begins and ends.

WHAT DO YOU THINK LIFE WOULD BE LIKE FOR YOU IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE MUSIC AS AN OUTLET?

I’m not sure I can imagine it, but I guess if I never started playing music I would be doing something else with my time. Music is a form of expression and creativity for myself, just as making furniture or painting is.

IS THERE ANYONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH?  WHY?

I have friends that I haven’t yet recorded music with, and I would like to. It’s all about finding the time. I’m sure I’ll make some more records with some new people before I’m gone.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE A CAREER FOR THEMSELVES IN THE INDUSTRY?

I can’t say much for the industry, but I guess generally, if you really like what you do, you’ll have a better chance of doing it well. Doing what you like and enjoying the journey seems like a pretty good way to live. Not that we are all so privileged, as to be able to do that.

WHO’S THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU’VE WORKED WITH/MET?

All my friends are interesting, and I feel very lucky to be able to make music with the people that I make music with.

FAVOURITE HANGOVER CURE?

I don’t drink
