A Quick Chat With Laurie Cave

Hey Laurie, congrats on your debut single ‘Nobody Could Ever Love You’! Can you tell us what it’s about?

Yes, of course. It is about that crushing moment when I realised that I had to face up to my demons. For me personally it was deep early wounds that had festered and were manifesting as social anxiety, low self worth and depressive episodes. The song also has an upbeat tone because I believe we can heal and overcome these wounds and become much stronger.

Who are your key musical influences?

My influences vary widely. From the songwriters of Laurel Canyon - James Taylor and Carole King, through Indie Rock behemoths like The Strokes and The Arctic Monkeys . These were the artists that taught me how to write real songs. All the way to modern icons like Brandon Flowers, Justin Vernon, Marcus Mumford and Sam Fender.

When you’re not making music, what might we find you doing?

I’m a bit of an exercise nut, so you’ll probably find me cycling the wineries of the Yarra Valley, running laps of Princes Park in Brunswick or Muay Thai sparring (Thai kickboxing) - these are my physical meditations that help me create.

If you could collaborate with one person, who would it be?

God that’s a hard one, but I think it would have to be Brandon Flowers. He is a hero for me.

CD’s, Vinyl or Cassettes?

I grew up with CD’s. My portable CD Walkman is as glued to me growing up. I have a real penchant for those little CD travel wallets where you had to choose your favourite 50 albums to spin on the move!

If you were an instrument, which one would you be and why?

If I was an instrument, I would probably be a saxophone, because I love the limelight and making a lot of noise but I can also be quite sultry and understated.

What is your creative process like?

For me there is one constant in my process. It doesn’t matter where the idea comes from: a jam; playing around on Ableton using synths and loops; a lick on the electric guitar… I always have to actually write the full structure of the song in my bathroom. I love the reverberant sound of the tiles and hard surfaces, that’s when I truly get lost in the music and the songs just write themselves.

One thing you couldn’t live without?

My NutriBullet! As ridiculous as this sounds, I absolutely love that thing, it fuels me in the most delicious way.

What was the first concert you ever went to?

The first ever proper concert I went to was Muse. It was utterly life changing - Matt Bellamy was other-worldly. Fun fact, I almost died in the mosh pit as more and more people fell over and piled on top of my head. I was rescued by a huge topless Viking of a man. To this day my guardian angel.

What’s next for Laurie Cave?

Total world domination. Most people laugh when I say that, but I’m deadly serious! More promptly I will be putting out my second single around the end of May, with a few more to come this year. And gigging! Lots of gigging with my band starting in July. Can’t wait!
