A Quick Chat with lucidbloom

‘Mutual Gravity’ is the 2nd single from your debut EP ‘Calamity’.
Can you tell us about the single and how it fits into this body of work?

We feel that Mutual Gravity is a signature track for the band. It’s danceable, beautiful, destructive, epic and tunes into our apocalyptic brand of dream pop that we first launched with Signals in the Skies. Mutual Gravity is a bit more personal, a meditation on the power of human magnetism, when you gravitate towards someone so intensely that you can’t pull away. We’ve just shot the video for this track and can’t wait to see how it turns out. It was filmed in an epic, post disaster landscape, in areas where trees were flattened and uprooted by floodwaters - then there’s this incredible thick lush grass covering the banks. The contrast is super striking. We also built a mini light bulb forest/ universe but I won’t say anymore - you will just have to watch it when it drops!

You’re about to release the EP at Oxford Arts Factory on May 30th, what can fans expect from your live show?

On May 30 expect three very cool bands (The Postcards, Adorer and LUCIDBLOOM) who are all distinct from each other but have developed a mastery of building atmosphere through music and are sonically dynamic. There will be an epic responsive lighting installation by SIRCUIT, activated for all acts to dial up the immersion vibes. We’ll also have our limited edition vinyls and tote bags on sale. So if you haven’t bought a ticket yet…

Who would you consider your biggest influences (musical or non musical)?

We’ve definitely got a range of influences coming from different band members. From dark electronic pop to 90s shoegaze and post-rock, to contemporary acapella choir projects, we’re each bringing our own directions into the mix. Radiohead, Beach House, Slow Dive, War Paint, Wolf Alice are all bands we rate very, very highly. Other people hear more nostalgic influences in our music like 90s femme fronted bands Cardigans, Hole, No Doubt. It depends where you focus your attention…

When you’re not making music, what might we find you doing?

Life is basically work and music over here but you will often find us collaborating on other connected projects, whether it’s in the workshop as part of SIRCUIT - soldering, wiring, stripping cables and building light installations! Or producing other music projects, curating arts and community events, or designing all our own content in house.

We do try to make a bit of a thing out of our rehearsal days too - we play, we feast, we film, there’s band dogs and kids running around, it’s a true band family vibe.

If you could have dinner with three people (dead or alive) who would they be?

David Lynch, Courtney Love, Thom Yorke

What’s in store for the rest of 2024?

GIGS! Now the EP is in the world we want to share it far and wide! We’re enjoying being able to jump on the stage and craft shows and visual experiences that respond to different spaces, and reach new audiences. We’re hoping soon to take the show a bit further on the road with a mini tour later in the year, and then we’re looking to settle in and write the next chapter of LUCIDBLOOM.
