A Quick Chat With Lucinda Poy

Introducing Lucinda Poy, a natural songwriter who is originally from Brisbane but now studying music in Perth, she has debuted with a big vibrant indie rock number ‘Just Fine’. Despite it being her debut release, she already has a heap of wins under her belt from winning Best Original Song at the Wynnum Fringe Festival to gracing the stage at Brisbane's iconic Gabba stadium for pre-game entertainment. Since relocating to Perth, Lucinda has been embraced by the local music community, making appearances across the city and even on Channel 7's Telethon. Now with 'Just Fine', Lucinda delivers an upbeat, feel-good indie-rock anthem that speaks to resilience in the face of adversity. We caught up with her to find out more about her and her release.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

Just Fine is about piecing yourself together after facing challenges. People I've trusted have left without warning, built up my hopes too high... and I was crushed, so I had great material to work with! I wanted to reassure the listener that it would all be okay, that the facade of being "Just Fine" would eventually turn true.

Who are some of your influences and why?

Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters and Spacey Jane are my main music influences. My dad always had Foo Fighters blasting in the car when he dropped us off for school, it’s one of my favourite memories with him. I was completely obsessed with Taylor Swift and her Red album during primary school and embarrassingly, would ask to sing in front of the class. Later in high school I found a love for Indie music and Spacey Jane, and moved to Perth where that scene is really popular.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

When I’m writing a song, I’m inspired by a strong feeling I’m experiencing at the time and will journal my experiences — sometimes I turn these into lyrics. Strong melodies or guitar riffs sometimes get stuck in my head, and I’ll write a song based off of that. Last year, I was lucky enough to have my classmates play and produce my song with me. It was the best time making something so special with your best friends.

What do you think makes a great song?

Having a strong feeling or story present in the song, I believe is important. Music for me is about story telling, and if you can make something that urges people feel strongly or differently, that’s very powerful. A good catchy hook and strong melody is also just as crucial, a great song gets stuck in people’s heads and they hum it around the house.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

The hardest question ever. I’d have to say Dave Grohl, he’s like the Keanu Reeves of music. He’s got such a good ear and incredible experience, and I’d love to learn from him. His song “Show Me How” with his daughter Violet was stunning and I loved listening to that collab.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

I love watching movies, and reading books. I’d like to say I can cook but unfortunately I’ve nearly given myself food poisoning a few times since moving out of home. Currently I’m reading “The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo”, and awaiting the new Deadpool 3 movie.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Raymondouu, Sporting Goods and Doll Eyes are incredible, and they’re all opening for my single launch on this Feb! Raymondouu was runner up for the Triple J unearthed competition and just a fabulous Indie band. Sofia Watt from Doll Eyes was a finalist on the voice and shortlisted for the Coldplay Perth Competition, and Sporting Goods are really becoming popular in the Indie scene around Perth.

Winter or summer and why?

Summer. I just love swimming, jumping in and out of the pool and having a BBQ with friends and family. Floating around in the ocean, and hitting up the beach, it’s so perfect.

What else do you have planned for 2024?

Some big plans for this year, releasing singles, gigging, and a small tour in QLD in the end of year break! I’m so excited to connect with more of Australia with performances on both coasts, and show them my original music.
