A Quick Chat With Lucy Korts

Brisbane’s own Lucy Korts is back with an empowering new single, Stronger, an indie-pop anthem that radiates resilience and raw emotion. Known for her goosebump-inducing vocals and captivating melodies, Lucy delivers a song that speaks to anyone who has fought a silent battle. With pulsing drums, melancholic piano, and a soaring chorus, Stronger is both a reminder and a rallying cry—to rise, to heal, and to reclaim your power. We caught up with Lucy to find out more about the track, her creative process and more.

Can you tell us what this track means to you and what you want people to take away from it?

I wrote Stronger because I needed an anthem for myself at the time. I was facing a lot of battles and struggles that nobody else could see, and I created the song as a means to guide me through the worst of it. Now that it's out in the world, I hope that it can be the same anthem for others. I hope that my song can push you to keep going when it feels like you can't. And I hope it can make you feel stronger.

Who are some of your influences, and why?

Two of my biggest influences are Gabrielle Aplin and Maggie Rogers. I love that they're not afraid to change. They are ever-evolving in sound, and I think it speaks to how true the art that they create is. When I recorded Stronger, I went into the recording space with a similar mindset. I wanted to create a sound that best served the song and the meaning behind it. I love that Gabrielle and Maggie can pump out such powerhouse pop tracks, and yet, they still sound so raw and vulnerable. They're my two biggest inspirations.

What's the creative process for you, from writing through to recording?

It changes all of the time. I don't follow a 'process,' and my ideas often come to me in completely different ways. The melody for Stronger came into my head with the line "I'm stronger than you'll ever be," right before I was taken in for surgery. I was scared and didn't know what the outcome would be. I needed something to remind me how strong I was, and so I gave myself that something. I actually remember quickly grabbing my phone before the surgery team came in to take me. I quickly recorded a video of me singing the melody so I wouldn't forget when I woke up. Other times lyrics have come to me first when I've felt like there was something really specific I had to say. I always go with what feels good and right.

What do you think makes a great song?

I think what makes a great song is saying all of the things that everybody else is thinking, but too afraid to say. It's the willingness to be ridiculously vulnerable. I think that's what makes people connect to your art.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Gabrielle Aplin. For the same reason that she is one of my biggest influences and more. I would love to watch the process of how her melodies and lyrics come to her, especially in a collaboration setting.

When not working on music, what other creative outlet/s do you have?

My greatest love outside of music is martial arts. I love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and used to formally train Kung Fu (which also has my heart). I've always been fascinated by martial arts since I was a little kid, and having the opportunity to train is my biggest passion outside of writing and performing.

Who are some local bands we should check out?

Some of my favourite Australian acts at the moment are Eliott, Cap Carter, JUNO, Hazel Mei, BIRDEE, HANNI, DAMIEN and Mikayla Pasterfield.

Winter or summer and why?

Summer. Two words: Iron deficiency...

What do you have planned for 2025?

New music, new shows and so much more. I can't wait to give back more art to the people that have stuck with me through it all. 2025 is the year of more music.
