A QUICK CHAT WITH MANNEQUIN DEATH SQUAD
Congratulations on the release of ‘Everybody’s Movin’! What is the story behind the release?
This one was inspired by too many nights out on tour where you find yourself sometimes not wanting to be there. Another venue, another city, and you are drinking the same shitty beer, and you just want to go home to bed because you’re severely under-slept. You've experienced this feeling for the 6th night in a row, haha.
How did your music career start? Have you always known you wanted to do this?
El watched her Mum sing along to Blondie in the car rides to school and heard her sister shredding guitar to Nirvana, so music was pretty hard to avoid in the house. As soon as I found out what harmonies were and wrote my first song at 12, I was pretty sure it was what I wanted to do.
Dan's dad taught him drums and guitar from the age of five. He only dabbled until he started his first band with his mates at 18. Since then, he has never stopped playing.
How did you both meet and what made you decide to form ‘Mannequin Death Squad
We both met at NMIT in Melbourne while studying Music Business. We didn't pay too much to the business side of things, and we're more interested in stealing the rehearsal rooms to jam out as loud and annoyingly as possible. Eventually, some cool songs arose, and we decided to make it official.
What has been the most notable live performance to date?
Playing Ziro Festival in the foothills of the Himalayas in India would definitely be a recent highlight. They gave us a headline slot, we played for over an hour, and we're lucky enough to have 4,000ish lovely humans sing our songs back to us in a foreign land. An absolute dream!
What are you hoping to achieve by this time next year?
We are hoping to have a whole bunch of new music released, new countries toured in, and an epic hometown show to show for 2024.
